A PhD scholarship worth €1,750 a month in combined stipend and research support sounds attractive on its own. The Ernst Ludwig Ehrlich Studienwerk (ELES), however, is looking for something more specific than excellent grades.

Who Is This Scholarship Actually For?

The programme has two main applicant groups.

• Jewish doctoral candidates can apply across essentially all academic disciplines except medicine.
• Non-Jewish doctoral candidates can also apply, but their doctoral research must focus on a Jewish subject and normally be conducted at a German university.

ELES explicitly recognizes patrilineal Jewish descent within its eligibility framework.

International applicants are therefore not excluded by nationality, but non-German scholarship holders pursuing their doctorate at a German university must reside in Germany for the duration of the funding.

Do You Need PhD Admission Before Applying?

Not necessarily—and this is one of the more applicant-friendly rules.

ELES says candidates can apply before formal doctoral admission has been completed. Successful scholars can provide their official doctoral admission up to six months after entering the funding programme.

Applicants should nevertheless be in the early stage of their dissertation.

ELES is designed as early-career doctoral funding, not as a completion scholarship. Normally, the applicant’s latest university degree should also be no more than five years old, although relevant personal circumstances and care responsibilities may be considered.

Your Dissertation Proposal Has to Do More Than Sound Interesting

ELES expects an ambitious project that can realistically be completed within the funding period. The application requires a dissertation exposé of up to 10 pages, including the bibliography and work schedule, plus a preliminary dissertation outline.

Applicants also submit:

• A motivation letter explaining why ELES specifically;
• A short narrative CV of no more than two pages;

International applicants should also notice the language requirement. ELES expects German at B2 level, and candidates who are not exempt must provide certification no later than the start of the scholarship. Graduates of German-language school or university programmes may not need separate proof.

The doctorate itself may involve another academic language, but the scholarship community and its non-financial programme require meaningful participation in German.

• Wait for manual account activation; ELES says activation happens on working days.
• Prepare the 10-page dissertation exposé and preliminary structure.
• Upload the motivation letter, narrative CV, academic CV and engagement evidence.
• Arrange the Jewish-institution reference.
• Ask your doctoral supervisor to submit the academic assessment directly to ELES.
• Complete every required portal section until the application shows 100%.
• Submit no later than September 30, 2026.

One practical warning: ELES states that its application portal closes at 16:00 on the final application day, so this is not a scholarship to submit at 11:59 p.m.

More Than €1,750 a Month Stipend will be Available

The financial package is substantial, but ELES deliberately presents the programme as more than a bank transfer. Doctoral scholars receive mentoring and access to an academic and cultural programme, while an annual Forum for Doctoral Candidates gives researchers an opportunity to discuss academic and structural questions, present their work and network with other scholars.
