Are You Applying for Harvard Academy Scholars Postdoctoral Fellowship 2027?
If you are a recent PhD graduate or an advanced doctoral candidate in the social sciences, Harvard University is now accepting applications for the 2027–2028 Academy Scholars Program.
The fellowship provides a two-year, in-residence postdoctoral appointment at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with an annual stipend of $80,000 plus $6,000 per year in research support.
For foreign researchers, the most attractive part is that the programme is specifically interested in scholarship involving countries and regions outside the United States and Canada.
Can International and Foreign Researchers Apply?
Yes. The Academy Scholars Program is well suited to internationally focused researchers.
Harvard is looking for early-career social scientists whose work combines strong disciplinary research with deep knowledge of the language, history, politics, society or culture of a country or region outside the United States or Canada.
That means applicants researching Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and other regions may fit particularly well. The programme is not presented as being restricted to U.S. citizens or residents.
Who Is Eligible for the Harvard Academy Scholars Program?
You must either be a recent PhD recipient or an advanced doctoral candidate in the social sciences. For the August 1, 2027 start date, your PhD or equivalent degree must generally have been awarded within two years of that date.
If you are still completing your doctorate, you must be able to provide official documentation confirming the award of your degree by June 30, 2027. There is one major exclusion applicants should notice: if you currently hold or have already completed another postdoctoral fellowship, you are not eligible to apply.
Which Subjects Can Apply?
The programme is designed for researchers in the social sciences, but Harvard is particularly interested in work that crosses disciplinary and regional boundaries. A strong project might address comparative, transnational or country-specific questions involving politics, society, economics, institutions, culture or other social-science concerns.
Simply having a social-science PhD is not enough. Your project should also demonstrate genuine area expertise—for example, language skills and substantial knowledge of the country or region you study.
How Much Does the Fellowship Pay?
Each Harvard’s Academy Scholar receives:
- $80,000 annual stipend
- $6,000 annual research support
- Two years of funded postdoctoral research
- Mentorship from Harvard Academy Senior Scholars
- Access to seminars, dinners and interdisciplinary academic events
- Potential opportunities to teach at Harvard
Five to six Academy Scholars are normally selected each year. The fellowship must be completed within a three-year window, although the first year cannot be deferred.
Is the Fellowship Fully Residential?
Yes. This is a two-year in-residence fellowship at Harvard University. The programme is designed around participation in the Academy’s intellectual community rather than remote research from another country.
Researchers may need to travel for fieldwork as part of their projects, but the appointment itself is based at Harvard in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
What Should Your Research Proposal Show?
Applicants must submit a research proposal of no more than 2,000 words. A competitive proposal should explain:
- The central research question
- Why the question matters
- The project’s intellectual contribution
- The methodological approach
- Why your regional expertise is important
- What you intend to accomplish during the fellowship
Harvard allows footnotes, endnotes and bibliographies, and these do not count toward the 2,000-word maximum. The proposal should read like a serious postdoctoral research plan rather than an expanded personal statement.
What Documents Do You Need?
A complete application includes:
- CV with publication list
- Research proposal of up to 2,000 words
- One scholarly writing sample
- PhD programme transcript
- Three confidential recommendation letters
The writing sample may be a dissertation chapter or peer-reviewed article and should be in English, with a maximum length of 50 pages.
Co-authored work is allowed if your individual contribution is clearly identified, but it must not be co-authored with your academic adviser.
Important Advice for Foreign-University Applicants
Applicants educated outside the United States should not worry if their university does not produce an American-style transcript.
Harvard asks foreign applicants to provide as much official transcript-like documentation as their university registrar can issue, covering relevant graduate study, including Master’s and PhD programmes.
So do not try to redesign your university records yourself. Request the most complete official academic documentation your institution normally provides.
Recommendation Letters Have a Different Deadline
There is an important procedural detail here.
You must submit your own application first before the system sends upload links to your recommenders.
Your application materials are due by September 18, 2026 at 11:59 PM EDT, but recommendation letters may arrive until September 28, 2026 at 11:59 PM EDT.
Do not wait until September 18 to contact referees.

Not Sure Whether Your PhD or Research Region Fits?
If you are unsure about your PhD completion date, social-science discipline, regional expertise, previous postdoctoral experience or research proposal, leave your question in the comments below the article. Mention your PhD subject, country or region of research and expected graduation date, and we can help you judge whether the Harvard Academy Scholars Program 2027 is realistically open to you.
Dear team members, Thanks for your announcement on the postdoctoral fellowship. I hold a PhD degree in nursing sciences from the Catholic University of Central Africa. My thesis topic was the development of a clinical mentorship model for emergency obstetrical and neonatal care. Since this topic aims to strengthen the health system of Cameroon, I defended on 30 October 2025. Can I be eligible for the fellowship?
