Barbro Klein Fellowship Programme 2026

The Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study (SCAS) is now accepting applications for the Barbro Klein Residential Fellowship Programme for the 2026-2027 academic year. This esteemed fellowship is designed to support scholars in the humanities and social sciences who are conducting research on cultural and social diversity, heritage, creativity, public resistance, and cultural expressions in both local and global contexts.

Programme Overview and Eligibility

The Barbro Klein Fellowship aims to advance cultural research from a global perspective and is open to scholars from various disciplines. The programme particularly encourages applications from younger scholars in non-Western countries and from underrepresented genders.

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Hold a PhD (or equivalent doctoral degree) for at least three years at the time of application.
  • Demonstrate a promising record of independent research beyond the post-doctoral level, including significant publications.
  • Be active in international academic discussions and fora.
  • Not be required to hold a university position at the time of application.

Remuneration and Accommodation

Fellows in the programme typically receive a monthly salary, but SCAS does not match home institution salaries. Scholars are encouraged to seek additional financial support through sabbatical funding or grants. Additionally, SCAS provides accommodation for fellows who reside outside the Stockholm–Uppsala region and, when possible, also assists local scholars who are unable to commute.

Application Process and Required Documents

Applications for the 2026-2027 Barbro Klein Fellowship Programme must be submitted through the Varbi application system (https://www.swedishcollegium.se/fellowships/barbro-klein-fellowship-programme). The deadline for submission is 2 June 2025 (23:59 CET). As the deadline coincides with a national holiday weekend (28 May–1 June), applicants are strongly advised to submit their applications well in advance.

Candidates will be notified of the final selection results via the Varbi online application system no later than 28 February 2026.
