DUO-Korea Fellowship 2026 With €8,000 Funding for Europe-Korea Student Exchange

A new round of the DUO-Korea Fellowship Programme 2026 has officially opened, offering funded academic exchange opportunities between European and Korean universities. Backed by the ASEM-DUO Fellowship Programme, this scheme continues to target balanced student mobility between the two regions—an area where fully funded exchange options remain limited.

The DUO-Korea Fellowship 2026 is a funded student exchange program for undergraduate and master’s students enrolled in Korean and European universities. It supports paired exchanges (one Korean and one European student) with up to €8,000 total funding. The grant can be used for tuition, travel, and living expenses during a one-semester exchange.

Unlike conventional scholarships that fund individuals, DUO-Korea operates on a paired mobility model, requiring two students—one from Korea and one from a European ASEM country—to exchange places simultaneously. This structural requirement immediately filters out casual applicants and makes institutional coordination essential.

Why this matters now: student exchange funding across Europe and Asia has tightened in recent years, especially for short-term mobility programs. DUO-Korea fills that gap with direct financial support and simplified coverage flexibility, allowing students to allocate funds across tuition, travel, or living costs without restrictions.

What the Funding Actually Covers (Practical View)?

The Duo-Korean fellowship provides:

  • €8,000 total per pair (i.e., €4,000 per student)
  • Duration: 1 semester (up to 4 months)
  • Flexible usage: tuition, accommodation, or travel expenses

While €4,000 may not fully cover living costs in high-expense European cities, it significantly reduces the financial burden for short-term exchanges—especially when combined with university-level support or personal funds.

Eligibility: More Complex Than It Looks

This is not a direct-to-student application. Instead:

  • Applications are submitted through Korean universities only
  • A formal cooperation agreement between partner institutions is mandatory
  • Both students must be currently enrolled (Bachelor’s or Master’s level)
  • Minimum academic requirement: 10 credits / 20 ECTS during exchange
  • No double funding allowed from major government scholarships

Crucially, students cannot apply individually—they must coordinate with their university’s international office to be nominated.

Who Should Seriously Consider Applying?

This fellowship is best suited for:

  • Students already enrolled in universities with existing Korea–Europe partnerships
  • Applicants seeking short-term international exposure rather than full degrees
  • Candidates with strong academic records and clear study plans tied to credit transfer

It is moderately competitive, but the biggest barrier is structural—not academic. If your institution lacks a partnership agreement, you are effectively ineligible.

Why This Program Exists?

Launched in 2001, the DUO-Korea initiative was designed to correct imbalances in student mobility between Asia and Europe. Unlike Erasmus+ (Europe-focused), this program ensures reciprocal exchange, making it politically and academically strategic for participating institutions.

Application Deadline

The last date to apply for the DUO-Korea Fellowship 2026 is May 20, 2026.
