Fully Funded DAAD PhD Scholarships for 2026-2030 batch in Landscape Archaeology & Architecture

Are you passionate about archaeology, ancient architecture, and landscape research? The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), through its Graduate School Scholarship Program (GSSP), is now offering two fully funded PhD scholarships for international students to pursue doctoral studies in the “Landscape Archaeology and Architecture” program in Berlin, Germany.


Who Can Apply?

This opportunity is open to highly talented non-German candidates with a background in:

  • Prehistoric Archaeology
  • Classical Archaeology
  • Near Eastern Archaeology
  • Egyptology
  • Northeast African Archaeology

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree (or be near completion by application time) and must not have completed a PhD previously. Additionally, applicants must not have lived in Germany continuously before December 1, 2024, and their master’s degree must not be dated earlier than March 1, 2020.


What Does the Scholarship Cover?

If selected, you’ll receive:

  • A monthly stipend of €1,300
  • Travel allowance
  • Health, accident, and liability insurance
  • Research support and study material allowances
  • Family and rent allowances (if applicable)
  • A pre-sessional German language course
  • Up to €1,000 annually in material resources via your supervisor’s institute
  • Optional research stays abroad (max. 25% of program duration).

The scholarship will begin in October 2026 and run for four (04) years, with annual progress reviews.


Where Will You Study?

You’ll pursue your PhD under the renowned BerGSAS doctoral program (Berlin Graduate School of Ancient Studies), hosted by:

  • Humboldt-Universität Berlin or
  • Freie Universität Berlin.

The focus isn’t on a specific region or time period, but rather on advanced methods and strategies in landscape archaeology and architectural history. Projects exploring cultural anthropology, social archaeology, geostatistical methods, or the link between economy and landscape are especially encouraged.
