New Swiss Visa Appointment System Launching in New York from October 1, 2025
Visa seekers take note! A dramatic change is underway for Schengen visa applications submitted at the Swiss Consulate General in New York—and you don’t want to miss it. From October 1, 2025, the Swiss visa appointment process is getting a complete overhaul, with VFS Global stepping in as the new gatekeeper for Schengen visa submissions. This means you’ll no longer be dealing directly with the Swiss Consulate for short-stay visa appointments.
What’s Changing?
All Schengen visa applications (type C, stays up to 90 days) must be submitted to VFS Global starting in October. The Swiss Consulate is fully booked through September 2025, and tourist visa appointments will not be available during this transition. Expect the new appointment system to go live in the second half of August, so act fast or risk a 5-month wait—especially if you’re eyeing a holiday season trip to Switzerland or the Schengen area!
Urgent Travel? There’s a Lifeline!
If you’re traveling for:
- A business meeting (with employer and Swiss company invites),
- Short-term work under 90 days (with canton approval),
- Work at an international organization in Switzerland (with your contract),
- Or you’re attending a conference (with an official invite),
You may request an expedited appointment by contacting: [email protected]. Also, spouses of EU/EFTA nationals can request priority processing—just attach a copy of your marriage certificate.
Personal Appearance Still Mandatory (Sometimes!)
Planning to apply in person? Here’s what you need to know:
- New applicants or those who haven’t submitted fingerprints in the past 59 months must appear in person.
- Children under 12 are exempt.
- Previously collected fingerprints? You may apply by mail—but only if they’re readable. If not, back to the consulate you go!
What About Appointments?
- The Swiss Consulate’s appointment system is typically booked out 3–4 months in advance.
- No walk-ins or phone/email bookings—everything must go through www.swiss-visa.ch.
- Group travelers? Every individual needs their own appointment.
- Need to cancel? Email with subject line: Visa Appointment Cancellation.
⚠️ Warning: Double-booking will delay everyone’s visa—don’t do it!
Submitting by Mail? Read This First!
Mailed applications and returned passports require a prepaid, trackable envelope (FedEx or UPS preferred). The Swiss consulate is not responsible for any loss, so double-check your mailing details.
What About Long-Stay Visas (Type D)?
Studying, working, or joining family in Switzerland for over 90 days? Here’s your path:
- No walk-ins or appointments needed—everything is handled via mail.
- Reach out to [email protected] for step-by-step help.
If you’re heading to an international organization like the UN or CERN, don’t forget—even internships need a visa! Contact the consulate directly for guidance.
Don’t Forget the Essentials
Before booking or mailing:
- Your passport must be issued within the last 10 years and have at least two blank pages.
- Submit a completed online visa application through www.swiss-visa.ch, or use the printable form if necessary.
