PhD Scholarship in Biology at Leibniz Institute of Plant Biochemistry (Class of 2026)

Are you ready to take the next step in your research career? If you’re passionate about plant biology, sustainable agriculture, or plant–microbe interactions, here’s some exciting news: the Leibniz Institute of Plant Biochemistry (IPB) in Halle (Saale), Germany, is inviting applications for a PhD position in Biology (Ref. 17/2025).

Why This PhD Matters?

Agriculture faces big challenges—climate change, shrinking phosphate reserves, and the rising cost of fertilizers. This project is about finding smarter, sustainable ways for crops to access phosphorus (P), one of their most important nutrients.

By studying maize and rice, you’ll work on:

  • Understanding how plants sense and respond to phosphorus.
  • Exploring how roots, fungi, and soil microbes interact to improve nutrient uptake under stress.
  • Testing these findings in real field conditions to create more resilient crops.

It’s an opportunity to do research that doesn’t just stay in the lab—it contributes to solving real problems in global food security.

Who Can Apply?

This PhD is open to students with a Master’s or Diploma degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Agricultural Sciences, Bioinformatics, or a closely related field.

You should also bring:

  • Strong English language skills (spoken and written).
  • An interest in teamwork and interdisciplinary research.
  • Independent and solution-oriented thinking.

Bonus points if you already have:

  • Experience working with rice or maize.
  • Knowledge of plant-microbe interactions.
  • A good understanding of DNA, RNA, and protein biology.

What You’ll Get?

As a PhD candidate at IPB, you’ll benefit from:

  • A 3-year employment contract (65% E13 TV-L) with fair pay.
  • Flexible, family-friendly working hours and the option for home-office.
  • Professional training and skill-building opportunities.
  • Pension contributions and health promotion programs.
  • A welcoming, international research community right in the heart of Germany’s Weinberg Campus.

How to Apply?

Your application should include:

  • A cover letter explaining your motivation and past research experience.
  • A CV (with publications, if any).
  • Contact details of two referees.
