Settle in United Kingdom Via Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) Scheme June 2025 Onwards
The United Kingdom’s Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) program remains fully operational as of June 2025, offering migrants a chance to settle in the UK permanently. However, upcoming government reforms could bring major changes to the settlement pathway in the near future.
✅ ILR Still Accessible — Act Now If Eligible
Migrants currently residing in the UK on qualifying visa routes—such as Skilled Worker, Global Talent, Innovator Founder, or Spouse/Partner—can still apply for ILR after completing the required lawful residence period, which is generally five years.
ILR allows individuals to:
-
- Live, work, and study in the UK without time limits
- Access healthcare and public funds
- Travel in and out of the UK freely
- Apply for British citizenship after holding ILR for 12 months (or immediately if married to a British citizen)
Applicants must meet current requirements, including:
⚠️ Settlement Reforms on the Horizon
The UK government has announced its intention to reform the immigration system by introducing stricter pathways to permanent residency. One of the proposed changes is to increase the ILR qualifying period from five (05) to ten (10) years (Ref) for most visa categories.
There are also plans to implement an “earned settlement” model (Ref). This may offer faster ILR routes only to high-income earners or those working in essential sectors such as healthcare, engineering, or tech.
These changes are not yet in force, but they are expected to roll out in phases over the next several months.
⏳ What Migrants Should Do Now?
If you’re currently in the UK and approaching ILR eligibility:
- Apply as soon as you meet the criteria – typically within 28 days before your 5-year mark
- Don’t delay – changes could be introduced without long grace periods
- Prepare your documents – including your Life in the UK Test result, proof of continuous residence, and English language certificate
- Consult with an immigration adviser – to ensure your case is strong and submitted on time.
