Spemann Graduate School Scholarships 2025 by GSSP Germany

The Spemann Graduate School of Biology and Medicine (SGBM) is inviting applications from international candidates for up to four PhD positions funded by the DAAD Graduate School Scholarship Program (GSSP) 2025/2026. The program offers outstanding students the opportunity to pursue research in life sciences at a prestigious German institution.

Benefits of the DAAD GSSP Scholarship

Selected candidates will receive a comprehensive scholarship package, which includes:

  • A monthly stipend of EUR 1,300.
  • A travel allowance based on the country of origin.
  • A combined health, accident, and liability insurance.
  • A study and research allowance of EUR 460 per year.
  • Additional rent and/or family allowance, if applicable.
  • The scholarship is renewable for up to four years, contingent upon successful academic progress.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for the DAAD GSSP scholarship, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Hold a master’s degree in life sciences or an equivalent field.
  • Have an excellent academic record.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in English.
  • Must not have resided in Germany for more than 15 months before the time of nomination.
  • Should not have graduated more than six years before the time of nomination (exceptions apply as per DAAD guidelines).
  • Must not have completed a PhD previously.

Selection Process

The selection process for the DAAD GSSP scholarships consists of multiple stages:

  1. Initial Application to SGBM: https://www.sgbm.uni-freiburg.de/node/1847
  2. Online Interviews: Shortlisted candidates will be invited for online interviews.
  3. Nomination for DAAD GSSP: Selected candidates will be nominated for the DAAD scholarship.
  4. Final DAAD Application: Nominated candidates must submit a separate application via the DAAD portal.
  5. Final Decision by DAAD: The DAAD is responsible for the final selection and administration of scholarships.

Timeline of GSSP Scholarship Application Consideration 

  • Application Deadline: March 9, 2025
  • Online Interviews: Early May 2025 (dates to be announced)
  • Nomination to DAAD: End of May 2025
  • Earliest PhD Start Date: October 2025 (subject to DAAD’s decision).
