Stanford Science Fellowships 2027 Open (Application Submission Guide)

Stanford University has opened applications for the Stanford Science Fellows 2027 selection cycle, offering early-career researchers a three-year postdoctoral appointment with a $98,000 annual stipend, benefits and additional research funding.

You may apply from any country, but this fellowship is restricted to fundamental research in the natural sciences. It is not available for proposals primarily focused on the social sciences, nor is it intended for experienced postdoctoral researchers who have already moved beyond the programme’s strict early-career limits.

The most important step before applying is to check your PhD date, previous postdoctoral experience and Stanford affiliation. These requirements are firm, and Stanford states that exceptions or eligibility waivers will not be granted.

What Will Stanford Science Fellows Receive?

Each Stanford Science Fellow will receive substantial financial, research and professional support for a three-year appointment.

The 2027 fellowship package includes:

• An annual stipend of $98,000;
• Benefits provided under the fellowship appointment;
• Up to $10,000 per year for research and professional development;
• Up to $2,500 toward relocation expenses;
• Supplemental childcare assistance grants for eligible fellows;
• Visa-expense assistance for eligible international fellows;
• Access to Stanford faculty, laboratories and research communities; and
• Community-building and professional-development activities.

Over the standard three-year term, the stipend alone may total approximately $294,000. This does not include the potential value of benefits, annual supplemental funding, relocation assistance, childcare grants or eligible visa support.

The appointment normally begins on September 1 and ends on August 31 three years later. Stanford may also permit a July 1 or August 1 start, but the fellowship cannot begin after September 1, 2027.

Who Can Apply for the Stanford Science Fellows 2027?

You can apply if you are an early-career scientist pursuing fundamental research and will satisfy Stanford’s PhD and postdoctoral-experience limits when the fellowship begins.

An eligible applicant must:

• Have received a PhD within three years of the fellowship start date;
• Have no more than two years of previous postdoctoral experience at another institution when the fellowship begins;
• Hold the PhD before beginning the fellowship, even if the degree is still in progress at the application stage;
• Propose fundamental experimental or theoretical research in a natural-science discipline;
• Demonstrate a strong record of scientific achievement;
• Show intellectual drive and the ability to advance scientific understanding;
• Be willing to collaborate across conventional disciplinary boundaries; and
• Participate in Stanford’s fellowship community and professional-development activities.

How Should You Check Your PhD-Date Eligibility?

You are ineligible if your PhD was awarded before July 1, 2024, because July 1, 2027, is the earliest permitted fellowship start date.

You must also consider your postdoctoral experience separately. An applicant who received a PhD and began uninterrupted postdoctoral work before July 1, 2025, would generally exceed the 24-month prior postdoctoral-experience limit by the earliest fellowship start date.

You may still apply while completing your doctorate, provided the degree will be formally awarded before your Stanford fellowship appointment begins. Current doctoral candidates should enter their expected PhD-conferral date as the “Highest Degree Earned” date in Academic Jobs Online rather than entering the date of their bachelor’s degree.

Are Current Stanford Researchers Eligible?

No, current Stanford graduate students and postdoctoral researchers are not eligible for the Stanford Science Fellows competition.

You must not hold a paid or unpaid Stanford affiliation during the selection process, which continues through the end of February 2027. A prospective Stanford postdoctoral researcher also becomes ineligible if their Stanford appointment begins before March 1, 2027.

This rule is commonly misunderstood: finding a Stanford faculty member willing to host you is encouraged, but beginning a Stanford appointment during the selection period can make you ineligible.

Can International Researchers Apply?

Yes, applications are open to researchers of all nationalities, and Stanford provides eligible international fellows with immigration guidance and visa-expense assistance.

However, the fellowship does not create an employer-employee relationship and is therefore incompatible with H-1B employment status. International candidates must generally qualify for a J-1 visa, although an F-1 extension may be appropriate in some cases.

If you require US immigration sponsorship, do not assume that every visa category will work. Your ability to qualify for an appropriate fellowship-compatible status will form an important practical part of accepting the award.

Which Research Fields Are Eligible?

The programme supports fundamental experimental and theoretical research across the natural sciences, including interdisciplinary projects.

Applicants must select one primary area when submitting the application:

• Astronomy and astrophysics;
• Biological sciences;
• Experimental chemistry, including chemical biology;
• Earth and oceans, including ecology;
• Mathematics and statistics;
• Experimental physics; or
• Theory and simulation.

Your proposal may cross several disciplines, but you should select the area that drives the main research question and will require most of your effort.

Researchers with engineering backgrounds are not automatically excluded. However, a primarily applied engineering project is unsuitable. An engineering-based proposal may be considered when it uses or develops tools to answer fundamental questions in the natural sciences. Proposals primarily addressing social-science questions are ineligible regardless of the methodology used.

Documents Required for the 2027 Application

You must submit your application through Academic Jobs Online with a CV, cover letter, two short statements and three recommendation letters.

The required materials are:

• A curriculum vitae containing publications, full legal name, contact details and the actual or expected PhD date;
• A cover letter;
• Three letters of recommendation, preferably including one from your PhD advisor;
• A career statement of no more than two pages; and
• A research proposal of no more than two pages, with one additional page permitted for references.

Your career statement should explain your professional goals, relevant experience and how you would contribute to the Stanford Science Fellows community.

Your research statement must answer three direct questions:

• What is the research problem?
• What could be accomplished within three to five years?
• How could Stanford enable those accomplishments?

Both statements must use a font size of at least 11 points and margins of at least three-quarters of an inch. Single or double spacing is accepted. Figures are permitted, but their legends must use a font size of at least nine points.

Do You Need a Stanford Faculty Host Before Applying?

You do not need a confirmed host to submit the initial application, but the fellowship cannot be awarded until at least one Stanford faculty member agrees to host you.

Stanford strongly encourages applicants to identify and contact suitable faculty members as early as possible. Your research statement should not merely praise Stanford generally; it should explain which laboratories, faculty expertise, facilities or interdisciplinary connections would make your proposed work possible.

A prospective host may write one of your recommendation letters, but this is optional. If selected, you will participate in one or more Stanford faculty research groups while holding your primary appointment in a suitable academic unit.

Participating schools include the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability and the Schools of Medicine, Humanities and Sciences, and Engineering.

How to Apply for Stanford Science Fellows?

You must prepare and submit the complete application through Academic Jobs Online; Stanford will not accept documents by email.

1. Confirm that your PhD date and prior postdoctoral experience fall within the permitted limits.
2. Check that your project addresses fundamental research in an eligible natural-science discipline.
3. Identify Stanford faculty members whose expertise and facilities match your proposed research.
4. Prepare your CV, cover letter, career statement and research statement.
5. Create an application through the Academic Jobs Online portal.
6. Enter the names and active email addresses of three referees.
7. Activate the automated reference request by selecting “email notify writer on submit” or using the green notification arrows.
8. Confirm directly with each referee that the request was received and did not enter a spam folder.
9. Submit the Yale Science fellows program application and monitor its status to ensure that all three letters have been uploaded.

Your telephone number and an email address that you check frequently should be included in the application. Interview invitations may be time-sensitive, and Stanford warns that previous candidates have nearly missed them because of incomplete or infrequently monitored contact information.

What Happens After the Application?

Applications will be reviewed by Stanford faculty from across the natural sciences, and shortlisted candidates will be invited to an online interview.

Each application is read by at least two reviewers, and applications may be shared between research areas when a proposal is interdisciplinary. Most Zoom interviews are expected during the first two weeks of December, although some may occur at another time.

The selection process continues through the end of February 2027. A final award cannot be made until a Stanford faculty member has agreed to host the candidate.
