The SBW Berlin Scholarship remains an unusual route into funded study in Germany because international students do not have to wait for one annual application deadline. Applications are accepted throughout the year for eligible Bachelor’s and Master’s candidates planning to study at a recognized university in Berlin or Potsdam.

But applicants should understand the catch before getting excited about the funding: SBW Berlin is primarily looking for socially committed students who already work with a non-profit organization and intend to use their education for a concrete social project.

Who Should Seriously Consider Applying?

SBW Berlin is a strong fit if you can answer yes to most of these questions:

• Are you between 18 and 30 years old?
• Do you already have meaningful volunteer or professional experience with a non-profit or social organisation?
• Can that organisation formally recommend you?
• Do you have grades roughly equivalent to German 2.0 or better?
• Does your household have relatively limited financial resources?
• Are you planning a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Berlin or Potsdam?
• Can you design a credible social project connected to problems in your home country?
• Are you genuinely prepared to continue that work after graduation?

If your main objective is simply to obtain a German scholarship and remain permanently in Germany, SBW Berlin may not be the right programme for you.

What Does SBW Berlin Actually Pay For?

Successful scholars can currently receive:

• Afurnished room in shared student accommodation;
• €480 per month toward living costs;
• Support with tuition fees;
• And, in some cases, a contribution toward travel to Germany and the return journey.

Funding can continue for the regular duration of the programme, up to 48 months, but continuation is reviewed periodically. This is therefore more valuable than looking at the €480 stipend alone—the accommodation and tuition components form an important part of the package.

The Social Project Is Not Optional

This is where many otherwise strong applicants may fail.

You need prior involvement with a non-profit or social organisation in your home country. That organisation plays an active role in the application and must explain your previous work, responsibilities and how your proposed studies connect with the social project.

Successful scholars are expected to spend approximately 2–8 hours each week developing their project during their studies.

SBW Berlin also expects project reports, workshops, presentations and continued engagement. In other words, do not invent a social project simply because the application asks for one.

How Does the Application Actually Work?

The scholarship uses a useful two-stage filter.

First: your non-profit/social organization submits its recommendation to SBW Berlin.

SBW Berlin reviews it before deciding whether you should receive access to the full scholarship application.

Then: selected applicants submit the main application, including documents such as:

• application form of SBW Admissions & Scholarship;
• 2–5 page project description;
• academic transcripts and certificates;
• university entrance qualification;
• household income information;
• academic/professional supporting evidence.

Strong candidates can later be invited to an interview or video conference, which may include discussion of the project’s first six months and even a practical task.

Do You Need University Admission First?

Your university application and SBW Berlin scholarship application are separate. Applicants are responsible for applying to a state-recognized university or Fachhochschule in Berlin or Potsdam.

You can therefore prepare the scholarship route alongside your university applications rather than assuming SBW Berlin places you at a university.

What About the GPA Requirement for Admissions at SBW?

SBW Berlin expects applicants to have an academic average equivalent to German grade 2.0 or better. For applicants using a standard U.S. 4.0 GPA system, a useful planning interpretation is:

• 3.5–4.0/4.0: comfortably strong academically
• Around 3.3–3.49/4.0: generally around the B+ or better level indicated by SBW Berlin
• Around 3.0–3.29/4.0: potentially below the intended benchmark and should be checked through formal grade conversion
• Below 3.0/4.0: unlikely to satisfy the academic benchmark unless the applicant’s grading system converts unusually favourably

SBW Berlin’s own guidelines describe its German 2.0-equivalent requirement as broadly corresponding to mostly B+ grades or higher, Upper Second Class standing, or around 80%+.

Therefore, for a U.S.-style transcript, about 3.3/4.0 or higher is the safer benchmark to communicate to applicants—but it should not be advertised as an official SBW Berlin “3.3 GPA cutoff.” SBW evaluates grades using its stated conversion method and may later require a formal grade evaluation.

The Return-to-Home-Country Rule Needs Serious Attention

This is probably the most important condition to read before applying. Recipients are generally expected to return to their home country after completing their studies and continue developing their social project there for at least 18 months.

Those who instead remain in Germany can become subject to a repayment agreement requiring the scholarship’s financial benefits to be repaid through 12 monthly instalments, beginning three months after the funding or study period ends.

That makes the scholarship very different from funding programmes designed primarily as routes into Germany’s post-study labour market.

Should You Apply?

Apply if you already have genuine social-sector experience, financial need, good academics and a project you want to build in your home country.

Consider other scholarships if the social-project requirement is something you would only be creating to satisfy the form.

And because SBW Berlin has only 20 scholarship places in total, with new awards depending on vacancies, a generic application is unlikely to be enough.

Your strongest argument is not simply:

“I need funding to study in Germany.”

It is:

“Here is the problem I am already working on, here is the organization I work with, and here is exactly how studying in Berlin or Potsdam will allow me to solve it better.”
