Biotechnology Scholarship 2025 at HZDR Germany

Are you a biotechnology enthusiast with a passion for innovative research in health and sustainability? Then here’s your chance to dive into one of the most exciting PhD projects of 2025 at a leading German research institute! The Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), under its Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology (HIF), is inviting applications for a PhD Student (f/m/d) in Bioproduction and Purification of Siderophores — a role that blends genetic engineering, bioprocessing, and sustainability-focused innovation.

Program Overview

This PhD position focuses on the bioproduction and downstream processing of siderophores like Desferrioxamine B (DFOB), Desferrioxamine E (DFOE), and Bisucaberin (Bis). You’ll contribute to pioneering work using native and genetically modified organisms, as well as cell-free systems, to optimize production yields and develop scalable purification strategies — specifically using two-phase aqueous extraction systems.

Required Responsibilities

  • Production and purification of various siderophores through advanced biotechnological methods
  • Development of scalable downstream processes for siderophores
  • Application of genetic engineering, cell-free technologies, and bioreactor operations
  • Contributing to applied research in an interdisciplinary, international setting

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for this competitive PhD position, applicants should have:

  • A completed Master’s degree in Biotechnology, Biology, Bioprocess Engineering, or a closely related field
  • Strong foundation in genetic engineering, molecular biology, protein production, and downstream processing
  • Experience in operating bioreactors and an understanding of cell-free bioproduction
  • High motivation for teamwork, international collaboration, and applied scientific research
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English

What You’ll Gain?

A fully-funded PhD position aligned with Germany’s TVöD-Bund salary structure, including competitive stipend, 30 days of paid leave, and pension scheme (VBL).

  • Work in a diverse, international, and collaborative research community
  • Access to HZDR’s structured PhD program with training, workshops, and networking
  • Flexible work environment including options for mobile and part-time working
  • Subsidized Deutschland-Ticket (Jobticket) for public transport
  • Health & wellness programs, corporate discounts, and more employee perks.

The last date to apply for the PhD Student (f/m/d) position in Bioproduction and Purification of Siderophores at Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) is 30 June 2025.
