KAIST International Graduate Admissions for Spring 2027 are open now, with applications being accepted from August 18 to September 1, 2026 for international students seeking Master’s, Master’s–PhD Integrated and PhD admission.
And KAIST is not a university that needs much embellishment: the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology is ranked 65th in the QS World University Rankings 2027.

Which Degrees KAIST is Offering Under Postgrad Scholarship?
International applicants can enter KAIST through three (03) main graduate routes:
| KAIST Degree Route | Minimum Academic Qualification | What It Means |
|---|---|---|
| Master’s | Bachelor’s degree or equivalent | A standard postgraduate degree for applicants who have completed, or will complete, a Bachelor’s qualification before starting at KAIST. |
| Master’s–PhD Integrated | Bachelor’s degree or equivalent | A combined research pathway allowing eligible students to progress toward a PhD without completing a separate Master’s application first. |
| PhD | Master’s degree or equivalent | Designed for applicants who already hold, or will hold, a Master’s-equivalent qualification before the KAIST programme begins. |
The Master’s–PhD Integrated route is particularly useful for applicants already certain that they want to continue into doctoral research, while the standalone Master’s offers more flexibility for students who want to reassess their research direction before committing to a PhD.

What Subjects Are Available at KAIST for Admissions to International Applicants?
This is much broader than a South Korean scholarship restricted to one STEM department and KAIST organizes international graduate study across five colleges:
- Natural Sciences
- Life Science and Bioengineering
- Engineering
- Liberal Arts and Convergence Science
- Business
Departments span areas such as physics, chemistry, mathematics, biological sciences, electrical engineering, computer science, mechanical engineering, aerospace, chemical and biomolecular engineering, industrial engineering, materials science, nuclear and quantum engineering, artificial intelligence, technology management and other interdisciplinary fields.
However, applicants should not assume that every programme recruits in every admission round. KAIST specifically warns that participating programmes can vary between Spring, Fall Early and Fall Regular admissions.

How Fully Funded Is the KAIST Scholarship for Spring 2027 Intake?
KAIST offers more than one layer of graduate funding, so applicants should distinguish the standard KAIST Scholarship from the more competitive KGPS and KPS awards.
| Funding Route | Eligible Degree | Tuition | Monthly Support | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| KAIST Scholarship | Master’s, MS-PhD, PhD | Full tuition | Stipend varies by college/research funding | Programme-based |
| KGPS | Master’s, MS-PhD | Full tuition | KRW 1,000,000/month | 4 regular semesters |
| KPS | PhD, MS-PhD | Full tuition | KRW 300,000/month | Up to 8 regular semesters |
KAIST says around 94% of its international graduate students receive financial support. The standard scholarship stipend can vary by college, laboratory and research arrangement.
Applicants selecting the KAIST Scholarship are automatically considered for KGPS or KPS where eligible, so there is normally no separate application for these two awards.

Do You Need a KAIST Professor’s Acceptance Before Applying?
Not necessarily.
There is no universal KAIST international graduate rule stating that every applicant must first obtain an acceptance letter from a professor.
For research-heavy Master’s and PhD applicants, however, identifying professors whose work matches your interests can be very useful. KAIST itself provides faculty information and research-search resources specifically to help prospective students explore research areas and potential academic connections.
Some departments may place more importance on supervisor contact or conduct interviews as part of their own evaluation.
But applicants should be wary of the claim that “a professor liking you automatically overrides a low CGPA.” Supervisor interest can strengthen research fit; it does not cancel KAIST’s institutional and departmental admission evaluation.

What IELTS or TOEFL Score Does KAIST Require for 2027 Admissions?
For international graduate admission, KAIST’s current minimum English scores include:
| Test | Current Minimum |
|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | 6.5 overall |
| TOEIC | 720 |
| TEPS | 326 |
| TOEFL iBT | 83 for tests before Jan. 21, 2026; KAIST uses the revised scale for newer TOEFL tests |
KAIST accepts IELTS Online, but IELTS One Skill Retake is not accepted under the current graduate rules. TOEFL MyBest scores are also not accepted.
Can Pakistani, Indian or Nigerian Applicants Apply Without IELTS?
Potentially — but nationality alone is not enough.
Applicants from countries including Pakistan, India, Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Singapore, Philippines, South Africa and several others may request an EPT exemption when they have physically studied and completed a Bachelor’s-equivalent or higher qualification in English at an institution located in an eligible country.
They must additionally provide evidence such as an English-medium/English Lecture Certificate from the university.
So “IELTS is automatically waived for Pakistanis” is inaccurate.
What Documents Should You Start Preparing for KAIST Scholarship Application?
The exact document package can vary by programme, but international graduate applicants should be prepared for the core academic and identity evidence requested through the KAIST application process, including:
- Online graduate application; (Link Given Below in Process Section)
- degree information;
- Academic transcripts;
- Passport/nationality documentation;
- English proficiency score or valid exemption evidence;
- Recommendation material;
- academic/research information requested by the programme;
- And any department-specific documents.
Research-oriented departments may require additional evidence, so never prepare solely from a generic KAIST checklist without checking the department you selected.
After admission, KAIST requires formal verification of academic records through recognised processes such as Apostille or appropriate embassy/consular verification, depending on where the documents were issued.

9 Step Process to Apply for KAIST Postgrad Scholarship 2027
- Choose your degree route: Decide whether you are applying for a Master’s, MS-PhD Integrated or PhD programme.
- Select the right department: Match your academic background and research interests with the most suitable KAIST department rather than choosing only on university ranking.
- Check professor fit: For research-intensive programmes, identify professors working in your area and confirm whether prior supervisor contact is required or recommended.
- Confirm your English requirement: Prepare a valid IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC or TEPS result, or check whether you genuinely qualify for KAIST’s English Proficiency Test exemption.
- Select the KAIST Scholarship: Applicants seeking institutional funding should choose the KAIST Scholarship option. Eligible candidates can then also be considered for KGPS or KPS.
- Complete the online application: Enter your academic, personal and programme information through the KAIST international graduate admission portal and upload the required documents.
- Complete your recommendation: Make sure the required referee/recommendation submission is finished before the deadline. Your application should not be treated as complete while a recommendation is still pending.
- Prepare for departmental evaluation: KAIST departments may assess your academic record, research fit and supporting documents, and some applicants may be contacted for further evaluation or interview.
- Complete post-admission verification: If admitted, prepare the required verified degree and transcript documents, complete university registration and then proceed with the D-2 student visa process.
What If Your GPA Is Not Exceptional for KAIST?
KAIST does not publish one universal minimum CGPA for every international Master’s, MS-PhD or PhD programme, so applicants should be cautious with websites claiming a fixed “3.5 GPA requirement.”
For practical guidance, I would use this range:
- Around 3.5+/4.0 equivalent: a strong academic position for a competitive KAIST graduate application.
- Around 3.0–3.49/4.0: still potentially viable, particularly with strong research experience, publications, recommendations and good professor/lab fit.
- Below about 3.0/4.0: increasingly difficult at KAIST and should be treated as a high-risk application rather than an impossible one.
Recent applicant discussions commonly mention 3.5/4.0 as an informal competitiveness benchmark, while candidates around 3.0 continue to apply when they have substantial research experience. These are applicant observations, however, not an official KAIST cutoff.
KAIST itself uses a 4.3 GPA scale, where A+ equals 4.3, A0 equals 4.0, A− equals 3.7 and B+ equals 3.3.
Professor interest, publications, relevant research, strong recommendations and clear laboratory fit can strengthen a lower-GPA application—but they should not be described as automatically overriding weak grades or formal admission requirements.

September 1 Is Not the End of KAIST 2027 Opportunities
The immediate Spring 2027 graduate application closes September 1, 2026.
But applicants discovering this guide afterward should not discard it.
KAIST admits international graduate students through Spring, Fall Early and Fall Regular cycles. The university has not yet announced exact Fall 2027 dates, but its regular annual timetable places Fall Early applications around December and Fall Regular applications around March.
That means an applicant who misses Spring 2027 can use the same preparation work—professor research, English testing, transcripts and recommendations—to get ready for the Fall 2027 admission rounds, once their exact dates and participating programmes are officially announced.
For applicants who are unsure about their CGPA, IELTS waiver, degree eligibility, intended KAIST department or whether they should choose Master’s, MS-PhD or PhD, leave your nationality, qualification, GPA and research field in the comments below. A strong KAIST application begins with choosing the right route—not simply pressing Apply before September 1.
