The fully funded Martingale Scholarships 2027 are now open for eligible students seeking selected master’s or PhD degrees in mathematical sciences and artificial intelligence at leading UK universities. However, overseas applicants must check one decisive restriction before preparing an application: this is not a conventional scholarship open to all international fee-paying students.

You must qualify for UK Home Fee status and normally have a substantial history of schooling in the UK or Ireland. Therefore, an applicant living and educated entirely in Pakistan, India, Nigeria or another country abroad would not normally qualify merely because they want to study in Britain. Refugees who qualify for Home Fee status receive an exception from the usual schooling-history condition.

What Does the Martingale Scholarship Cover?

The Martingale Scholarship covers the principal academic and living costs of an eligible postgraduate degree. Successful scholars receive:

• full university tuition fees;
• eligible research expenses;
• a tax-free stipend set according to the Living Wage Foundation;
• university-application workshops, proofreading and individual guidance;
• leadership training and career-development opportunities;
• connections with academic and industry professionals; and
• membership of the Martingale research community.

The Foundation describes the scholarship as fully funded but does not publish one universal annual stipend figure for the 2027 cycle. Applicants should therefore avoid relying on unofficial websites that attach a fixed cash amount to the award.

Can International Applicants Apply for the Martingale Scholarship?

Applicants with an international background may qualify, but candidates assessed as overseas-fee students cannot apply. Nationality alone does not determine eligibility. You must satisfy the following conditions:

• Hold, or be on track to receive, a First or Upper-Second Class degree or its equivalent in a relevant subject.
• Be eligible to begin an approved UK master’s or PhD degree in September 2027.
• Qualify for Home Fee status at a participating university.
• Have attended school in the UK or Ireland for at least three years between the ages of 11 and 18, or for at least seven years between the ages of 4 and 18.
• Have completed GCSEs or the equivalent at a state-funded school, or have received a means-tested scholarship or bursary covering at least 90% of fees at a fee-paying school or college.
• Have faced financial barriers, including having a household income of £45,000 or less.

Home Fee status will generally involve an eligible immigration or nationality status—such as British or Irish nationality, settled or pre-settled status, indefinite leave to remain or right of abode—together with the relevant residence conditions. Other legal routes may exist, so applicants should consult the official eligibility guidance instead of deciding from nationality alone.

Refugee exception: An applicant with refugee status who qualifies for Home Fee status may apply without meeting the normal minimum UK or Ireland schooling-history requirement. The detailed guidance also explains certain circumstances involving asylum seekers, stateless people and humanitarian protection.

Age requirement: Martingale publishes no maximum age limit. However, you must be at least in the final year of undergraduate study when applying.

English-language requirement: The Foundation does not impose one scholarship-wide IELTS, TOEFL or equivalent score. You must instead satisfy the English-language rule of the university and course to which you later apply.

Which Degrees and Universities Are Included?

Funding is restricted to the mathematical-sciences and artificial-intelligence courses specifically approved for the 2027 competition. The available fields include pure and applied mathematics, mathematical physics, computational mathematics, computer science, machine learning, robotics, autonomous systems and AI applications in healthcare or sustainable development.

The published course list includes opportunities at the University of Bristol, University of Cambridge, University of Edinburgh, University of Glasgow, Imperial College London, University of Manchester, University of Oxford, University College London, University of Warwick and University of York. Available subjects and degree levels differ between institutions.

Financial mathematics and programmes focused exclusively on statistics are not funded during this cycle. Applicants should examine the official Martingale scholarship and course listings before choosing a degree because the Foundation will only fund programmes included on its approved list.

Which Documents Should You Prepare?

You must prepare information and evidence covering both academic merit and financial circumstances. The initial application requires:

• Your academic transcript;
• Evidence of financial need and household income;
• details of your education and family background;
• Written answers explaining your research interests and motivation; and
• Contact details for two referees.

The Foundation normally expects two academic referees. References do not have to be submitted by the main application deadline because Martingale contacts referees separately and gives them another deadline. If you cannot obtain two academic referees, contact the Foundation before replacing one with a professional referee.

How to Apply for a Martingale Scholarship in 2027?

You must apply to the Martingale Foundation first and submit university applications later if you become a Qualified Candidate.

1. Read the official 2027 eligibility guidance and confirm that you meet every condition.
2. Review the approved degree programmes and select the mathematical-sciences or AI options relevant to your academic background.
3. Complete the Martingale online application, including the “About Me” and scholarship-specific sections.
4. Provide your transcript, financial information and the contact details of two academic referees.
5. Attend an in-person interview in November 2026 if shortlisted.
6. If selected as a Qualified Candidate, use Martingale’s application support and apply separately to one or more eligible partner-university courses.
7. Wait for the university admission decision and the final Martingale funding allocation in spring 2027.

You may express interest in multiple Martingale scholarships through one application, but you must complete the relevant subject-specific questions. A university admission offer does not automatically guarantee scholarship funding because each institution has a limited number of funded places.

What Is the Martingale Scholarship 2027 Deadline?

The last date to apply for the Martingale Scholarships 2027 is Sunday, 18 October 2026, at 23:59 UK time. Applications opened on 12 August 2026. Interviews are scheduled for November, and applicants should receive the initial outcome in December 2026.

Qualified Candidates will receive university-application support from December 2026 into early 2027. Some university courses may have earlier deadlines, so successful candidates must follow the course-specific timetable communicated by Martingale and the relevant institution.
