What the £20,000 headline really covers?
This is a tuition-fee discount, not a maintenance scholarship. Queen Mary deducts £5,000 from the tuition charged for each academic year. A student on a standard three-year degree could therefore receive up to £15,000; the stated £20,000 maximum is reached across four eligible years. The first deduction is applied when you enroll.
The award continues only when you achieve an average of at least 65% in each academic year. It does not pay accommodation, food, transport, visa costs, the Immigration Health Surcharge or the balance of tuition. Queen Mary expressly says recipients must be able to finance the remainder of their fees and living expenses. Treat part-time earnings as supplementary money, not your visa-funding plan.
Who can qualify—and who should not rely on it?
You qualify by surpassing, not merely meeting, the academic condition of your eligible Queen Mary offer. The university accepts the following benchmark, or the relevant approved overseas equivalent:

You must retain Overseas fee status, be fully self-funded and enroll full-time in 2027/28. It cannot be combined with another Queen Mary scholarship, Queen Mary fee discount, or a full-fee award from another source. Queen Mary lists BSc Accountancy, English and French Law, Dentistry, Dental Therapy and Hygiene, Medicine (including Malta), degree apprenticeships, foundation programmes, exchange/study-abroad routes and second-year transfer entry as ineligible. Senior Status LLB offer holders with a first-class degree or equivalent can be considered.
How to avail the scholarship?
Apply for admission, not for the scholarship. The general equal-consideration deadline for most 2027 Queen Mary undergraduate courses is 13 January 2027 at 18:00 UK time; eligible courses may have their own requirements, so check the course page before submitting.
- Choose an eligible full-time September 2027 undergraduate programme and check its academic and English-language requirements.
- Apply for admission Queen Mary Scholarship through UCAS early and submit the qualification evidence Queen Mary needs to assess your overseas equivalent.
- Receive an offer, then make sure your final achieved results exceed the offer at the Global Talent level—not just the course minimum.
- Make Queen Mary your unconditional firm choice and enroll. Admissions will show the scholarship decision through your applicant portal and apply the fee deduction.
Do not defer the scholarship: it is only for students who apply and enroll in the 2027/28 academic year. An offer alone is also not enough; the award is confirmed only once your status is unconditional firm and you register.
Can you Work Part-time While Studying?
Usually yes, but the scholarship does not create the right to work—your Student visa does. Under the current UK Student Route rules, a student on a full-time degree-level course at a compliant higher-education provider can normally work up to 20 hours a week during term time and full-time during official vacations.
You cannot be self-employed, and remote work carried out while you are physically in the UK normally counts toward the same weekly cap. Always follow the work condition printed on your immigration permission.
Must you Return to your Country after Graduation?
No return-home condition appears in Queen Mary’s Global Talent Scholarship terms. The award is a university tuition discount, not a government scholarship with a bond requiring you to go home. However, your Student visa does end. Under rules currently published by the UK government, a successful bachelor’s graduate who applies from inside the UK from 1 January 2027 can apply for a Graduate visa lasting 18 months; it cannot be extended, but a graduate may be able to switch into a different route such as Skilled Worker if eligible.
Because a September 2027 entrant may graduate years later, immigration rules could change before then. The sensible conclusion is: you are not contractually forced to return because of this scholarship, but staying in the UK after study requires a valid immigration route at that time.
