MIPDaL Scholarships 2027: Study in UK, Estonia, Spain, Germany, France
MIPDaL Erasmus Mundus Scholarship applications are open for 2027–2028, but this law master’s has a demanding entry point: you normally need at least 240 ECTS of qualifying legal study. A standard three-year bachelor’s alone may leave you short.
Coordinated by TU Dresden, the Master in Intellectual Property and Data Law combines two universities in two countries within one academic year. You choose a direction in IT and data law, creative industries or industrial property, then earn a degree from each university you attend.
The scholarship can remove both consortium tuition and UK partner top-up fees. This guide helps you match your qualifications and languages to a route, prepare the evidence and avoid confusing the scholarship deadline with the portal’s later closing date.
Your MIPDaL application guide
01 Which countries belong to the MIPDaL network?
The six universities span five countries. These cards describe the consortium network: you attend two universities in different countries, both outside your country of residence at enrolment. The published programme structure connects the location choices to your specialisation.
Germany
TU Dresden · Dresden
English-taught foundation and specialisation options in the programme.
Estonia
Tallinn University of Technology · Tallinn
English-taught foundation and IT & Data Law options.
France
Université de Strasbourg / CEIPI · Strasbourg
French-taught foundation and industrial-property study options.
Spain
Universidad Carlos III de Madrid · Madrid
Spanish-taught first-semester foundation option.
United Kingdom
Queen Mary University of London / University of Exeter
Second-semester options: Creative Industries at Queen Mary; IT & Data Law or Industrial Property Law at Exeter.
I would choose the legal problem you want to work on before ranking cities. Your route and statement become more coherent when the specialisation grows from your previous studies or practice.
02 What changes financially if you win MIPDaL funding?
MIPDaL offers up to 12 Erasmus Mundus scholarships annually. Holders pay neither consortium tuition nor the additional UK partner top-up fee, and receive support towards monthly expenses.
The current EU EMJM funding rules calculate scholarship support at €1,400 per month for the funded study period. This is the EU rate; MIPDaL’s admissions page confirms the fee exemptions and monthly support without publishing a separate stipend figure.
Admission alone does not include this award. Before accepting a self-funded offer, account for tuition, any UK top-up fee and living costs as a separate financial decision.
03 Can your legal qualification and languages meet the threshold?
The official DAAD programme listing explains the 240-ECTS route: for example, a four-year law degree or a three-year bachelor’s followed by a first master’s. The consortium also considers law-related degrees with sufficient legal content, subject to recognition by the partners.
Final-year applicants may enter assessment after proving 80% of the credits towards the required degree; an offer remains conditional on completion. General admission expects performance comparable to a UK upper-second-class degree, while the consortium says scholarship recipients generally need first-class results and C1 English.
| Route language | Evidence to plan |
|---|---|
| English | C1 standard; exceptional B2+ admission is possible. IELTS Academic: 7.0 overall, at least 5.5 in each component and 6.5 in writing. |
| Strasbourg | French C1 is normally required. |
| Madrid | Spanish B2 is required. |
An English-medium instruction letter does not replace an accepted test. Waivers follow the consortium’s specified nationality, degree-country or UK school-study exceptions; C1 is strict for Queen Mary.
04 How to prepare and submit the MIPDaL scholarship file
Read the current MIPDaL admission requirements and templates before submitting to the coordinator. There is no application fee under EMJM rules. Prepare the following official uploads; PDF is preferred.
- CV, identification document and university degree certificates.
- Officially certified transcript, including its official English translation, and certified language evidence.
- Statement of Purpose and an academic reference on institutional letterhead with a signature. Applicants out of university for at least three years may use a professional reference.
- Select one specialisation and a permitted two-country route that fits your residence and language situation.
- Use the recommended Statement of Purpose and reference templates to organise your evidence. The templates are optional; their content prompts can still help you explain your fit.
- Register through the 2027/2028 MIPDaL Scholarship application campaign, complete the requested fields and place each document in its correct upload category.
- Submit a complete file by the scholarship cutoff and monitor messages. Selected applicants subsequently complete enrolment requirements with their admitting institutions.
I recommend asking your referee for a specific account of your legal analysis, research or professional work. That supports the academic case more clearly than a general character endorsement.
05 What can take a MIPDaL application out of consideration?
Incomplete files and unsupported language waivers are material risks. A missing certified record or valid reference can exclude the application. Avoid handwritten statements or references, and do not assume that an open portal after the scholarship deadline preserves funding eligibility.
06 MIPDaL questions worth settling before submission
Does choosing a UK university mean paying the top-up fee as a scholar?
No. MIPDaL expressly exempts Erasmus Mundus scholarship holders from UK partner top-up fees. Those fees matter when assessing a self-funded offer.
Must I have already completed the full qualifying degree?
Not necessarily at application: the consortium permits assessment with 80% of the required degree credits documented. You must satisfy the completion conditions attached to any offer.
Does an “evaluated” portal status mean I have won funding?
A processing status is not a scholarship award. MIPDaL uses comparative assessment and geographic balance; rely on the formal funding decision sent to you.
07 The MIPDaL scholarship deadline to work towards
Submit the complete MIPDaL scholarship application by 15 January 2027, as required by the admissions page. That page announces an opening on 1 October 2026. It does not specify a scholarship closing hour.
The scholarship portal instead displays a campaign window from 23 September 2026 to 30 June 2027 at 23:59, Europe/Paris. This conflicts with the admissions instructions; follow the earlier scholarship cutoff unless the consortium officially changes it. Separate general and late admissions dates are 15 March and 15 June 2027. Prepare your certified records, language evidence and reference for the January funding round.
