University of Borås Scholarships 2027: Master’s Programmes, Application Dates and Preparation Guide

From managing AI to turning waste into useful materials, the University of Borås Scholarships in Sweden can make an autumn 2027 master’s degree substantially more affordable. Degree applications are already open; the university’s tuition-scholarship application opens in December. Swedish Institute funding offers another route for applicants who meet its nationality and professional-experience requirements.

The important preparation question is which funding route actually fits your plans. Borås’s own award reduces tuition but leaves living expenses to you; Swedish Institute awards provide broader support, with a separate application and programme list. This guide explains the eligible subjects, evidence to prepare and submission sequence—and why spring 2027 is a different proposition.

01 Which Borås scholarship route fits your budget?

Borås offers a tuition waiver; the Swedish Institute offers separate scholarships with living support. Neither route is a general scholarship for every international student.

  • University of Borås Scholarships: approximately 75% tuition reduction for selected fee-paying applicants. Budget for the balance, accommodation, food and travel. Under the university’s scholarship regulations, newly admitted two-year recipients can receive a further 10 percentage-point increase in year two after completing 60 credits. Acceptance, payment and study-progress conditions apply.
  • SI Scholarship for Global Professionals: full tuition, SEK 12,000 monthly and a one-time SEK 15,000 travel grant; the grant is SEK 10,000 for six specified countries and is unavailable to recipients already living in Sweden. The official SI call requires eligible citizenship, work and leadership experience, fee liability and an approved master’s programme.
  • SI Scholarship Pioneering Women in STEM: full tuition, SEK 12,000 monthly and a SEK 15,000 travel grant, subject to the residence condition above. The Women in STEM call targets female citizens of Bangladesh, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, Nigeria, Philippines, Rwanda, South Africa, Thailand and Vietnam. Both SI awards exclude application fees, insurance and additional family grants.
  • Already studying at Borås? A separate year-two award may cover 75% of the remaining two semesters, subject to funds left after awards to new students. Its spring application is for continuing studies in autumn, not new spring admission.

Global Professionals accepts citizens of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Belarus, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Egypt, Ethiopia, Georgia, Guatemala, Indonesia, Iraq, Jordan, Kenya, Liberia, Malaysia, Mexico, Moldova, Morocco, Nigeria, Peru, Philippines, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Thailand, Uganda, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Zambia. Public-sector employees in Belarus and Georgia are excluded.

SI normally requires 3,000 work hours from no more than three employers before February 2027. Global Professionals applicants from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine must document experience but have no minimum hours. Leadership evidence is required for both awards. Prior Swedish study, residence, SI awards and dual citizenship can also affect eligibility; read the linked exclusions, including SI’s stated exceptions.

02 Which subjects and master’s degrees qualify?

The university’s autumn 2027 tuition-scholarship list contains these 12 master’s programmes. The linked course pages explain academic fit; an eligible subject alone does not guarantee admission or funding.

Master’s programme Length Subject focus
Informatics: Data-Driven IT Management 1 year IT, informatics and management
Information Systems: AI Management 2 years Information systems and AI management
Textile Management 1 year Textile business and sustainability
Fashion Marketing and Management 2 years Fashion business and marketing
Information Science: Digital Environments 2 years Information science
Resource Recovery: Biotechnology and Bioeconomy 2 years Biotechnology and waste conversion
Resource Recovery: Sustainable Energy Processes 2 years Energy recovery and thermal processes
Resource Recovery: Polymer Materials for the Circular Economy 2 years Polymers, materials and recycling
Resource Recovery: Sustainable Civil Engineering 2 years Buildings and circular construction
Textile Value Chain Management 2 years Supply chains and textile business
Textile Engineering 2 years Textile science and manufacturing
Technical Textile Innovation 2 years Advanced textile technologies

Match your transcript to the prerequisites: AI Management requires a bachelor’s degree, a 15-credit independent project and 7.5 credits in Information Systems; Sustainable Civil Engineering requires 60 relevant credits within a 180-credit bachelor’s degree. Energy applicants need thermodynamics, while Biotechnology applicants need chemistry. Textile Engineering specifies mathematics, chemistry, materials and textile-technology credits.

Borås’s own award excludes bachelor’s and artistic programmes; these routes do not advertise PhD funding. Fashion marketing and textile management are distinct from artistic fashion-design degrees. The SI-approved Borås programmes for 2027 are not yet confirmed: SI publishes its new lists on 13 November 2026. Borås’s SI lists still describe autumn 2026.

03 What should you prepare before the forms open?

Prepare admission evidence now, then tailor the funding evidence to the award. I would start with your transcript and course descriptions: they show whether your chosen specialisation is realistic before you invest time in scholarship essays.

  • Admission documents: organise your degree certificate, transcripts, identity document and English evidence, including required translations. Follow University Admissions’ document and country instructions rather than assuming every country uses the same submission method.
  • English preparation: the programmes generally specify English 6/English Level 2. IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no component below 5.5 is one accepted route. Other tests and qualifying previous education are possible under the national English requirements; a general medium-of-instruction letter is not automatically sufficient.
  • Borås scholarship preparation: gather evidence of motivation, an English-language thesis/project, sustainable-development engagement and additional academic achievements. Its published assessment gives up to 10 academic points, requires at least five to proceed, and adds up to five for these other merits. English 7 breaks otherwise equal rankings; it is not the general entry minimum.
  • SI preparation: identify two referees, including one who can assess your work, and organise certified work/leadership evidence. The required package includes SI’s CV template, experience forms, two references, valid ID and portal motivation. I recommend briefing referees now, then using the 2027/2028 templates released in November; signatures and stamps matter.

04 How to submit the admission and scholarship applications

Apply for the degree first, then submit the appropriate scholarship application separately. You can begin admission now; you do not need to wait for either scholarship portal.

  1. Submit your Borås programme choices. Create an account at UniversityAdmissions.se, select autumn 2027 programmes, rank them and save your eight-digit application number. Use the correct intake listing; some university pages also display older offerings.
  2. Complete any programme-specific selection task. Textile Management, Fashion Marketing and Management, and Textile Value Chain Management require a two-part motivation submission and English résumé, followed by an interview for shortlisted applicants. Use the link sent to your admissions account. Their extra submissions share the January admission deadline.
  3. Pay and document admission eligibility. Where required, pay the SEK 900 application fee and submit the academic and language documents by the national deadline. The fee is charged once per admissions semester, not once per programme.
  4. Apply for the Borås tuition scholarship when its form opens. Use the form that will appear on the University of Borås scholarship page and supply the evidence requested there. The pending form’s upload fields should not be assumed from a previous year.
  5. Submit one SI application if eligible. After the November programme-list release, match your Borås choices to SI’s approved list and complete the shared SI portal during February. Eligible women applying to approved STEM programmes are automatically considered for Pioneering Women in STEM; a second SI application is unnecessary.
  6. Act on the decisions. SI requires admission or conditional admission to an eligible programme on the first results day; reserve status is insufficient. If awarded Borås funding, accept by the offer deadline, pay the remaining tuition and register as instructed.

05 Mistakes that can derail a Borås application

Do not postpone admission until scholarship opening. Missing the first-round deadline can remove the SI route. Do not treat the later document deadline as an extension for the textile-management selection tasks. For SI, incorrect application numbers, missing signatures/stamps or outdated templates can cause disqualification. Finally, budget for the costs your award excludes before accepting an offer.

06 Three questions to settle before submitting

Can a design graduate apply for a non-artistic Borås master’s?

Yes, where the programme explicitly accepts that background. Textile Management and Fashion Marketing and Management list textile/fashion design among eligible previous degrees; their selection tasks still apply.

Must I be employed when applying for SI funding?

No. Documented previous employment, freelancing or entrepreneurship can count, provided you meet the award’s experience rules and can supply the required certification.

Does receiving Borås funding secure the entire two-year award unconditionally?

No. Continuation depends on payment and academic progress. The regulations distinguish the 60-credit threshold for the additional year-two increase from the 52.5-credit threshold for retaining remaining funding.
