ARC Future Fellowships 2027 Open at University of Queensland
What could you achieve with four years of research salary support and up to A$60,000 a year to develop your project? ARC Future Fellowships 2027 are open for established mid-career researchers, including international candidates seeking an Australian host.
The fellowship supports an independent research career after doctoral training. If you are looking for a funded master’s or PhD place, this opportunity does not serve that purpose. If you already have a substantial research record, start by checking your PhD award date and whether UQ is the right home for your next research programme.
Plan your ARC Future Fellowship application
Can you Apply through UQ as an international Researcher?
Yes—international researchers can be nominated, but UQ must agree to administer your application. You do not need to be a current UQ staff member to begin discussions. Contact [email protected] and the relevant school or institute to establish a host arrangement.
Your PhD must normally have been awarded between 1 March 2012 and 1 March 2022, inclusive. Use the formal award date. A recent PhD outside this window does not qualify simply because you have publications.
If your doctorate predates the window, recognized interruptions may restore eligibility. These can include parental leave, caring responsibilities, illness, disability, unemployment, non-research employment and disruption to research access. International relocation can count for up to three months per move. Document the dates and evidence; UQ must certify the adjustment.
Previous Future Fellowship recipients cannot receive another, and candidates nominated on three previous occasions cannot apply again. A qualifying doctoral or professional equivalent requires institutional certification.
If selected, non-Australian citizens must obtain the legal right to work and reside in Australia before starting. Fellows must reside in Australia for more than half the project period.

What does the 4-year ARC funding package provide?
The award combines salary support with a research budget of up to A$60,000 per year. Over four years, the project component can reach A$240,000. It is funding administered by the host institution for approved research expenditure.
Salary support is awarded at one of three levels corresponding to your academic standing. For international candidates, the institution must justify the equivalent level. Confirm the applicable salary and employment package with UQ rather than treating a grant total, which includes employment on-costs, as personal take-home pay.
Project funding can support research staff, equipment, consumables, specialist services, fieldwork, essential travel and dissemination. Build the budget around the resources needed to answer your research questions. Ask UQ separately about relocation support and employment conditions.

Which Research projects fit ARC Future Fellowships?
The scheme supports basic and applied research across disciplines, subject to ARC exclusions for medical research and experimental development. Potential fields include engineering, computing, mathematics, environmental science, humanities and social sciences.
Medical eligibility depends on what the project aims to do. Research directly addressing human disease prevention, diagnosis or treatment falls within the medical exclusion. Research on normal biological processes or human behavior can be eligible, including work with possible future medical applications outside the proposed project’s scope.
The scheme seeks researchers with evidence of research quality, leadership, mentoring and collaboration. Explain the gap your project addresses, why your approach advances the field, and how its outcomes could benefit Australia. A useful proposal connects the research problem to the host’s expertise and facilities.

What should you prepare before UQ reviews your application?
Prepare a research case, a track-record case and a justified budget together. Your working materials should include:
- Research profile: qualifications, publications, appointments, supervision, collaborations and relevant declarations.
- Evidence of research achievement: explain the significance of your outputs and leadership in the context of your opportunities and interruptions.
- Project description: questions, methods, work plan, innovation and expected outcomes.
- Institutional support: agree with UQ how the host will support the research and your career.
- Budget justification: cost each requested resource and explain any non-ARC contributions.
- National benefit statement: explain the research’s wider value in plain English.
Confirm attachment limits with your UQ research contact before formatting the final application. Start the host discussion with a concise project outline and research CV so the school can assess fit quickly.
