Which Tests Must Be Taken Now for Australia Scholarship Admissions?
Most international students should take an English-language test before scholarship applications open. There is no single scholarship examination required by every Australian university.
IELTS Academic
IELTS Academic is the safest general choice because Australian universities widely recognize it and it can also be used for the Student visa.
For many regular university degrees, a sensible target is:
- IELTS Academic: 6.5 overall;
- No individual band below 6.0.
This is a planning target, not a national admission guarantee. Nursing, medicine, dentistry, teaching, law and some other professional programmes may require IELTS 7.0 or higher. Always check the exact course page before booking.
PTE Academic or TOEFL iBT
PTE Academic and TOEFL iBT are useful alternatives when the selected university accepts them. Universities set their own scores, so do not choose a test based only on the visa minimum.
For Student visa tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, the standard visa baselines include:
- IELTS Academic or General Training: 6.0;
- PTE Academic: 47;
- TOEFL iBT: 67.

How Do You Apply for Australian Scholarships After New Policy Updates?
Australian scholarships follow three main application routes. Identify the correct route before submitting anything.
Route 1: Automatic Scholarship Consideration
Some universities assess eligible applicants automatically. In this case, submitting the course application correctly and before the relevant scholarship consideration date is essential.
For example, eligible new research applicants are automatically considered for the University of Melbourne Graduate Research Scholarships when they apply for their research course by the applicable deadline.
Route 2: Separate Admission and Scholarship Applications
Other awards require two submissions: one for the degree and another for the scholarship. You may need an admission application number or course offer before completing the scholarship form.
Examples include the Sydney International Undergraduate Academic Excellence Scholarship, selected UNSW international scholarships and the Deakin Vice-Chancellor’s International Scholarship.

Route 3: Government or Research Scholarships

Starting in July or August 2027: Prepare in Late 2026 and Apply in Early 2027
