Deakin University Scholarships 2027–2028 for International Students: Application Process
International students applying to Deakin University for 2027 can currently compete for tuition scholarships worth between 20% and 100% of course fees. However, applicants should ignore several awards promoted in older articles—including the Vice-Chancellor’s Academic Excellence Scholarship and Deakin Student Support Scholarship—because these are primarily domestic scholarship schemes.
Deakin has confirmed that applications are open for Trimester 1 starting in March 2027 and Trimester 2 starting in July 2027. Scholarship arrangements for 2028 have not yet been published, so students targeting 2028 should use the requirements below for preparation but recheck them when that application cycle opens.

Which Deakin Scholarships Can International Students Apply For?
1# Deakin Vice-Chancellor’s International Scholarship
This is Deakin’s largest coursework scholarship, covering either 50% or 100% of tuition fees for the normal duration of the degree. Recipients must also participate in the Vice-Chancellor’s Professional Excellence Program and receive priority access to university accommodation, although accommodation costs are not covered.
You can apply if you are a new international student entering an eligible Deakin coursework degree and have achieved at least an 85% average or its recognized equivalent. The Doctor of Medicine is excluded, and reaching 85% does not guarantee selection.
This award requires a separate application containing the International Scholarship Program application form, a 300-word personal statement, two leadership or community-involvement references, academic transcripts and a Deakin course application.
2# Deakin International Scholarship for Excellence
This scholarship reduces tuition fees by 25% for the entire degree and does not require a separate scholarship application.
Undergraduate applicants normally need at least a 75% academic average, while postgraduate applicants need 80%. The postgraduate threshold is reduced to 75% for citizens of India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Mauritius, Myanmar and Bhutan.
Eligibility is limited to applicants from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Mauritius, Myanmar, Nepal, the Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam. Applicants from the countries marked by Deakin as residence-restricted—including India, Nepal and Bangladesh—must also be residing in their home country. Health quota courses are excluded from this award. Eligible students are automatically considered with their course application.
3# Deakin International 20% Merit Scholarship
This is the most accessible of Deakin’s main international coursework awards. It provides a 20% reduction in total tuition fees for the normal course duration.
New international undergraduate and postgraduate students generally need at least a 65% average or equivalent. Indian citizens residing in India can qualify for postgraduate study with a minimum average of 60%.
No separate scholarship form is required. If you satisfy the conditions, Deakin automatically applies the reduction after the census date. Several limited-place health courses—including medicine, optometry, dietetics, clinical psychology, speech pathology and occupational therapy—are excluded. Applicants should check the complete 20% Merit Scholarship conditions before selecting a health degree.
Can You Apply Without IELTS at Deakin?
Yes, IELTS is not the only accepted route, but you must satisfy the English requirement of your chosen course.
For most undergraduate degrees, Deakin’s standard is IELTS Academic 6.0 with no component below 6.0. Equivalent minimums include TOEFL iBT 69 with Writing 21, PTE Academic 50 with no skill below 50, or Cambridge C2 Proficiency 169 with no band below 169.
For most postgraduate coursework degrees, the standard is IELTS 6.5 with no component below 6.0. Alternatives include TOEFL iBT 79 with Writing 21, PTE Academic 60 with no skill below 50, Cambridge C2 Proficiency 176 with no band below 169, or Cambridge C1 Advanced 180.
Approved previous study completed in English may also be accepted. Some professional and health degrees demand higher scores, so always verify the English requirement shown on the individual course page.
How Do International Students Apply?
- Select an undergraduate or postgraduate degree offering your intended 2027 intake.
- Check its academic, English and additional admission requirements.
- Prepare certified transcripts, qualification certificates, passport identification and English evidence.
- Apply through the Deakin StudyLink application portal or a Deakin-authorized representative where required.
- Wait for automatic consideration for the 20% or 25% scholarship.
- If targeting the 50% or 100% Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship, submit its additional form, statement and references to Deakin International Admissions.
Application Dates for 2027 and 2028
Deakin’s Trimester 1 2027 begins on 1 March 2027, Trimester 2 begins on 5 July 2027, and Trimester 3 begins on 1 November 2027. The university currently states that applications for the March and July 2027 intakes are open.
The main international coursework scholarships do not have conventional fixed closing dates because assessment is automatic or rolling. The last date to submit the Vice-Chancellor’s International Scholarship application is at least one month before your selected course begins, but applicants should apply considerably earlier because awards and course places are limited.
Deakin has not yet announced its 2028 application opening dates, intake calendar or revised scholarship conditions. Therefore, applicants should not rely on websites claiming confirmed 2028 deadlines until Deakin publishes them.
What About Fully Funded PhD Scholarships?
The RTP and Deakin University Postgraduate Research Scholarship international round for the February 2027 intake closed on 23 August 2026. Deakin has not yet announced the next international round for 2028. Research applicants should monitor the official RTP and DUPRS page rather than attempting to apply through the coursework scholarship process.
