Makerere University Mastercard Foundation Scholarships 2024

Makerere University, in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, is pleased to announce a renewed commitment to the Scholars Program, extending from 2023 through 2034. This initiative will provide 1,000 scholarships over a decade to talented young individuals from Sub-Saharan Africa who face financial barriers to higher education.

Sponsorship of Scholarship

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at Makerere University offers substantial benefits to its recipients, designed to ensure they can pursue their education without financial hardship and are equipped to become leaders in their communities. Here are the key benefits or sponsorships included in this scholarship:

  1. Full Tuition Coverage: The scholarship covers the full cost of tuition fees for the duration of the scholar’s academic program, ensuring that financial barriers do not prevent talented students from pursuing higher education.
  2. Accommodation and Meals: Scholars receive support for university housing or accommodation, along with meal plans, to ensure a comfortable living situation that enables them to focus on their studies.
  3. Stipends: Recipients are provided with stipends to cover basic living expenses and academic supplies, helping to alleviate the burden of day-to-day expenses.
  4. Health Insurance: To ensure that health issues do not impede academic progress, the scholarship includes comprehensive health insurance throughout the course of study.
  5. Travel Support: For scholars who are studying away from their home country or region, the program may include travel allowances to and from the university at the beginning and end of their studies

Eligibility and Application for Undergraduate and Master’s Programs

Undergraduate Scholarships:

  • Eligibility: Applicants must be under 28 years old (32 for refugees, IDPs, and those with disabilities), demonstrate significant financial need, and have completed Advanced level education in Africa without holding any other scholarships.
  • Program Focus: Preference is given to degree programs that align with strategic development areas such as Agriculture, Tourism, Mineral Development, Infrastructure, and Human Capital Development.

Master’s Scholarships:

  • Eligibility: Applicants must be under 35 years old (40 for refugees and those with disabilities), hold a Bachelor’s degree from an African institution, and exhibit financial hardship along with leadership potential.
  • Additional Requirement: A motivation statement (max. 500 words) explaining the societal challenges the applicant aims to address through their studies.

Deadline: All applications must be submitted by 5:00 PM on Friday, June 14, 2024, for the 2024/25 academic year.
