University of Arizona Domestic Scholarship 2025 by Dr Maria Teresa Velez

The University of Arizona (UArizona) is pleased to announce the Dr. Maria Teresa Velez Diversity Leadership Scholarship for the 2024-2025 academic year. This prestigious award honors the legacy of Dr. Maria Teresa Velez, the former Associate Dean of UArizona’s Graduate College, who dedicated her career to advancing diversity, inclusion, and excellence in higher education.

Award Benefits

Each recipient will receive a $25,000 stipend along with full main-campus graduate tuition and individual student health insurance coverage for one academic year. Recipients will not be permitted to hold other graduate assistantships or wage positions concurrently, and the award cannot be deferred.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for the scholarship, nominees must:

  • Be U.S. citizens or permanent residents
  • Be enrolled in a doctoral program on the University of Arizona’s main campus
  • Have a cumulative graduate GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Be in good academic standing (Note: JD, MD, DVM, Pharm-D, and UA Online students are not eligible)

Application Process

The application process is by nomination only, and each UArizona doctoral program is allowed to submit one nomination. The Director of Graduate Studies or Graduate Coordinator of each program must submit an online application on behalf of the nominee.

Nominees must provide the following documents:

  • A two-page essay detailing their goals and accomplishments in promoting diversity and inclusion in education or the community.
  • A current curriculum vitae.
  • A letter of recommendation from a UArizona faculty member discussing the nominee’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.
