This prestigious research distinction invites one outstanding scientist from anywhere in the world to collaborate with researchers at KIT for a dedicated research stay of up to six (06) months in Germany. During this period, the selected awardee will conduct a self-designed research project while actively engaging with the host institute and wider academic community.

The program particularly encourages interdisciplinary collaboration and knowledge exchange, welcoming projects that extend beyond a single institute or academic discipline. The award is designed not only to recognize exceptional scientific achievement but also to strengthen global academic partnerships and foster innovative research that addresses future societal challenges.

Only one award is granted each year, making the KIT International Excellence Award and SCHROFF Fellowship one of the most exclusive academic recognitions offered by the university.

Funding Blueprint Behind the KIT International Excellence Award

The KIT International Excellence Award is structured to provide strong financial and institutional support for collaborative research during the awardee’s stay in Germany. Alongside recognition of academic excellence, the program ensures that the selected researcher receives the necessary resources to execute a meaningful research project at KIT.

Awardees receive the following financial and research support:

  • Up to €50,000 in research equipment funding under the International Excellence Award of KIT to support the proposed research project at the host institute.
  • SCHROFF Foundation Fellowship subsistence allowance to cover living expenses during the research stay of up to six months at KIT.
  • Additional research grant support that may fund an early-stage researcher (postdoctoral fellow) from the awardee’s research group for a parallel research stay of up to one year at KIT.
  • Institutional research collaboration opportunities with KIT scientists across multiple disciplines.
  • Official recognition from KIT for outstanding international scientific contributions and leadership in addressing global challenges.

Who Qualifies for This Elite Research Honor?

The KIT International Excellence Award is designed for internationally recognized scientists whose work demonstrates exceptional academic impact and relevance to global challenges. Candidates are typically nominated by scientists affiliated with KIT who intend to collaborate with the nominee during the research stay.

Eligible candidates generally meet the following criteria:

  • Researchers from any country and any scientific discipline are eligible.
  • The nominee must be an internationally recognized scientist working outside Germany.
  • The candidate’s research should have significant and lasting influence within their field.
  • The work should demonstrate relevance to global societal challenges and future-oriented research topics.
  • The nominee must collaborate with scientists at KIT who submit the nomination.
  • The proposed research project should preferably encourage interdisciplinary cooperation across institutes or fields.

How the Nomination and Application Process Works?

The application for this prestigious research award follows a nomination-based process, meaning candidates cannot directly apply themselves but must be nominated by researchers affiliated with KIT. The nomination package must include a set of structured academic and supporting documents.

The process generally works as follows:

First, a KIT-based scientist identifies an internationally distinguished researcher whose work aligns with the institute’s research priorities. The nominating scientist then prepares the official nomination documents in collaboration with the candidate and the hosting institute.

The nomination package must include several essential materials such as the nomination form, a scientific appraisal written by the nominator, an invitation letter from the host institute describing the planned research project, the nominee’s academic CV, a list of key publications, and recommendation letters from internationally recognized experts in the nominee’s discipline.

Once the complete documentation is prepared, the nomination must be submitted electronically to the designated program email provided by KIT for the International Excellence Award. After evaluation by the selection committee, the final awardee is announced and invited to begin their research collaboration at KIT.

Application Timeline for the KIT International Excellence Award

The last date to submit nominations for the International Excellence Award of KIT combined with the Fellowship of the SCHROFF Foundation for 2026 is June 15, 2026. The selection results are expected to be communicated at the beginning of August 2026, while the official award ceremony will take place in Fall 2026.
