Not every scholarship in Germany is designed for applicants with perfect CVs and uncomplicated lives.

At Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU Munich), the SIST LMU Equality Scholarship takes a different approach. It combines academic achievement with financial need and is specifically aimed at international students and doctoral researchers whose studies are affected by a disability, chronic illness and/or refugee background.

Applications are currently open for LMU Munich scholarship until October 22, 2026, and successful applicants can receive up to €900 per month for as long as four months, subject to the availability and approval of DAAD scholarship funds.

This Is Not a Scholarship for New Applicants Abroad

The most important eligibility rule is easy to miss.

This scholarship is not intended for someone sitting overseas and planning to apply to LMU Munich next year.

Applicants must already be registered at LMU in a regular full-time degree or doctoral programme when they apply. Exchange students, programme students and students taking preparatory courses are excluded.

Applicants must also have their residence in Germany.

So the opportunity is best understood as financial support for eligible international members of the LMU community rather than a scholarship used to gain admission to the university.

Who Is the Scholarship Actually Trying to Help?

Applicants need to demonstrate both financial need and an eligible impairment or refugee background.

Proof may relate to circumstances such as a disability or chronic illness. Refugee-background applicants can also qualify under the scheme.

There are additional restrictions.

Applicants should not have obtained their Abitur and/or a previous German university degree in Germany or at a German school abroad, and they must not already be entitled to statutory or comparable financial support such as BAföG.

LMU assesses financial need against the current maximum BAföG rate of €992.

Can You Work While Receiving the Scholarship?

Yes—but income can directly affect the award.

An applicant earning no more than €695 per month may remain eligible for the full scholarship calculation. Where monthly earnings fall between €695 and €1,345, the scholarship can be reduced accordingly.

If earnings exceed €1,345 per month, scholarship funding is no longer possible under the stated conditions. This is therefore not simply a merit award layered on top of unlimited employment income.

Another Scholarship Can Also Make You Ineligible for LMU Scholarship

LMU states that the Equality Scholarship will not be awarded to applicants who are already receiving other scholarship funding, regardless of its source.

There is also a cumulative funding restriction: applicants must have received fewer than 30 months of previous scholarship support or fewer than three one-year scholarships, regardless of the organization that provided them.

And an applicant who has already received the SIST LMU Equality Scholarship itself cannot receive it again. Applicants also cannot simultaneously apply for the SIST LMU Study Scholarship, Equality Scholarship and Completion Scholarship.

What Documents Should Be Prepared?

This is a document-heavy application, and LMU explicitly warns that incomplete files cannot be processed.

Applicants need to prepare:

• A detailed CV;
• Amotivation letter;
• A formal statement of financial need;
• Proof of impairment and/or qualifying refugee background;
• academic records showing completed courses;
• Current LMU enrolment confirmation;
• Passport and residence permit copies;
• German bank-account details;
• German tax number; and
• relevant marriage, spouse-income or children’s documents where applicable.

One of the more demanding requirements is the need for two current academic references from LMU teaching staff.

If the applicant studies one major, both recommendations should come from that subject. For two majors, one should normally come from each. Students with a major and minor should obtain one reference from the major and another from a minor.

The referees—not the applicant—must send the completed and countersigned reference forms directly to LMU.

A Small Scholarship With a Very Specific Purpose

The SIST LMU Equality Scholarship is not designed to finance an entire degree in Munich.

Its maximum headline value is €3,600 over four months, but for a student dealing simultaneously with financial pressure and a serious personal barrier, that short-term support can still be significant.

More importantly, applicants should not self-reject simply because this is not a conventional academic-merit scholarship. LMU explicitly combines strong academic performance with impairment/refugee status and demonstrated financial need when defining the target group.
