University of Oslo Scholarships 2027: Prepare for January Application Window
The University of Oslo ISS Summer Scholarships 2027 will open for applications on 4 January 2027. If you want to study in Norway during Summer 2027, you can start preparing your course choice, English evidence and scholarship documents now, before the application portal opens.
The International Summer School (ISS) offers short master’s-level courses in subjects including human rights, community health, gender equality, sustainability and peace research. You apply for a summer course rather than a complete Norwegian degree. The courses offer focused study relevant to public policy, health and international development.
The useful question today is: what should you have ready when January applications begin? Start by establishing your eligibility and likely funding needs, then arrange the documents that depend on other people. This 2027 preparation guide takes you from those decisions to the combined admission-and-scholarship application.
2027 dates announced; preparation can begin now. See the submission timeline.
Short master’s-level summer courses; no full degree award.
Fee coverage; accommodation and travel support depend on the award.
Accepted test or documented official exemption required.
A separate scholarship application fee is not stated in the published instructions.
25 October 2026.
Prepare now, apply in January, study in Summer 2027
01 Which University of Oslo summer courses qualify?
General ISS scholarships support one master’s-level course per applicant. Bachelor’s courses and Norwegian language courses are excluded from this scholarship route. The published 2027 master’s list includes:
- The Fundamentals of Human Rights
- International Community Health
- Gender Equality in the Nordic Countries
- Development, Energy and Sustainability
- Peace Research
Course availability and details may change before applications begin. Build your preparation around the published 2027 list.

02 Who can apply for the ISS scholarship in 2027?
You need a bachelor’s degree or completed studies comparable to a Norwegian bachelor’s, together with the chosen course’s prerequisites. UiO applies country-specific qualification requirements, so the title “bachelor’s” alone does not establish equivalence. A strong academic record is also required for scholarship consideration.
Partner-university enrolment is not compulsory for the general route. General ISS scholarships exclude former recipients, Norwegian permanent residents and EU/EEA/Swiss citizens, although exceptional consideration may apply to the latter living outside that area. U.S./Canadian citizens use separate partial-award routes; other nationalities living or studying there receive case-by-case assessment.
For English, IELTS Academic requires 6.5 overall and in every component. Results must be no older than two years; One Skill Retake is not accepted. TOEFL, Cambridge and PTE alternatives are available. Exemptions require evidence under UiO’s published rules; an English-medium degree does not create a universal waiver.
I would settle your qualification equivalence and English route before requesting translations or booking a test. Your preparation should address the requirements that actually apply to your education.

03 What does University of Oslo ISS funding cover?
Coverage depends on the award. Use this comparison to identify the costs you would still need to meet:
| Award | Covered | Remaining costs |
|---|---|---|
| Basic Fee Scholarship | Tuition and participation fees. | Accommodation and travel. |
| ISS Accommodation Scholarship | Fees, shared room, meals; Oslo travel card if allocated. | Travel to/from Oslo. |
Applicants from Africa, Asia, Latin America and non-EU/EEA/Swiss European countries may request airfare support. Approval is separate; ISS books approved flights. Visa fees and airport transfers remain excluded. Selection considers achievement, financial need and cohort diversity.
My recommendation is to calculate your remaining budget before selecting housing. Requesting support does not mean every expense will be paid.

04 What should you prepare now, and how will you apply in 2027?
Prepare your evidence now; apply for admission and scholarship together through Søknadsweb when the 2027 window opens. You do not need to wait for January to choose a course, approach a referee or organise academic records.
- Now: choose your course. Use the 2027 ISS course catalogue to read the individual prerequisites. Human Rights, for example, expects relevant law, social-science or humanities preparation; documented professional experience may establish relevance for applicants without human-rights studies.
- Now: collect your application documents. Follow UiO’s scholarship document instructions: passport ID page, academic transcripts and degree certificates, English evidence, CV, one recommendation and the official scholarship form. Upload authorised translations alongside originals when documents are outside English, Danish or Swedish. Country-specific rules may require records directly from the issuing institution. Your passport must remain valid for at least six months after departure from Norway.
- Now: arrange your reference and tailor your CV. Your recommendation must come from an unrelated academic or employer, on official letterhead with contact details. For your CV, our Europass CV preparation guide can help organise relevant evidence; UiO does not prescribe Europass here.
- When applications open: register your scholarship application. Follow the official ISS application process into Søknadsweb. Choose the scholarship route rather than the self-financed route; you cannot apply through both. Select one master’s course and the stipend option. Choose private or ISS accommodation consistently with your funding request, and indicate any travel-support request on the scholarship form.
- Before the cutoffs: complete and review your saved application. Søknadsweb has no “Submit” button. You may return to update your application and documents within the applicable deadlines. Register the application within its window, then ensure every required attachment is present by the separate document cutoff below.
I recommend requesting records and your reference early. The general UiO scholarship page concerns wider degree and exchange funding; the dedicated ISS instructions govern this summer application.

05 University of Oslo ISS: applicant questions answered
Do I need a University of Oslo admission offer before requesting funding?
No separate prior admission offer is required in the published ISS process. You apply for the summer course and scholarship together. Prepare one coherent package supporting both your academic eligibility and funding request.
Can I wait until the document deadline to start my application?
No. The application window closes before the document-upload deadline. Use the later cutoff to complete the evidence for an application already registered on time; the full 2027 schedule appears below.
When will ISS scholarship results arrive?
UiO emails each applicant individually after processing the application. Its current application instructions give no fixed 2027 results date. Experiences from earlier cohorts should not be treated as your decision schedule.
