USTB China (MS-PhD) Scholarships 2027 Application Procedure Explained

A postgraduate degree in Beijing could become much more affordable through the University of Science and Technology Beijing’s 2027 Chinese Government Scholarship. USTB has announced funding for international master’s and PhD students, covering tuition, accommodation, medical insurance and a monthly living allowance. Applications for USTB admissions on CSC scholarships open on 1 November 2026.

There is plenty to explore beyond the university’s metallurgy programmes. You could study environmental engineering, communications, management or sociology in English, while doctoral applicants can also pursue English-taught study across the published PhD subjects.

Where should you begin: choosing a course, contacting a professor or writing your research plan? The encouraging answer is that you can start preparing without a supervisor’s acceptance letter. Here is how to find a suitable programme and put together the two applications USTB requires.

What would a funded USTB degree offer you?

01 Find a subject you would want to spend years studying

USTB offers postgraduate choices across engineering, science, business and selected social sciences. Start with a subject that builds on your degree or previous research, then choose its teaching language.

English-taught master’s options include metallurgical engineering, safety science and engineering, environmental science and engineering, information and communication engineering, enterprise management, management science and engineering, international trade, educational public administration and sociology. Master’s programmes take two or three years.

The doctoral catalogue includes materials and nanoscience, civil engineering, energy, artificial intelligence, computing, chemistry, management and foreign languages. USTB says all its doctoral programmes can be taught in English; its CSC page lists a four-year doctoral duration.

I would begin with your strongest project or research interest. If you can explain what you investigated, what you learned and what you now want to understand, you already have a useful starting point for the research plan.

02 How much of your study costs would the scholarship cover?

The CSC Type B award covers tuition, accommodation, medical insurance and a monthly living allowance. That support can make a substantial difference when you are planning several years of study away from home.

Study level Monthly allowance Other support
Master’s CNY 3,000 Tuition, accommodation and comprehensive medical insurance.
PhD CNY 3,500 Tuition, accommodation and comprehensive medical insurance.

You will still need money for the CNY 600 application fee and your preparation costs. Airfare is not included in the published benefit list, and the scholarship is subject to an annual review. Our Chinese Government Scholarship guide explains the wider funding arrangements and the difference between university and embassy applications.

03 Can you apply with your current qualifications?

You can apply if you are a non-Chinese citizen in good health and meet the scholarship’s degree, age and language requirements.

  • Master’s: Hold a bachelor’s degree and be under 35.
  • PhD: Hold a master’s degree and be under 40.
  • English-taught study: If English is not an official language of your home country, provide IELTS 6.0, TOEFL 80 or another official English-proficiency certificate.

For Chinese-taught study, the general graduate guide asks for HSK 5 at master’s level and HSK 6 for a PhD. The scholarship notice also offers a Chinese-language training year for applicants with HSK 4. If you want that preparatory year, especially before a PhD, ask [email protected] to confirm your eligibility before paying.

Final-year students may apply with a pre-graduation or enrolment certificate and supply the completed degree later. You do not have to abandon the application simply because your graduation ceremony has not yet taken place.

04 How to prepare and submit your USTB application

You need to complete both the CSC form and USTB’s university application. The 2027 scholarship notice gives the scholarship instructions; the graduate admission guide supplies the fee and general application requirements.

  1. Choose your programme. Use the master’s catalogue or doctoral catalogue, then read the English-taught programme descriptions if you want to study in English.
  2. Prepare the documents. Gather your notarised qualifications and transcripts, passport, language proof, health certificate, police clearance and financial-guarantee form. PhD applicants need both bachelor’s and master’s records. Ask two professors or associate professors for recommendations; at least one should know your current field.
  3. Write your personal statement and research plan. Use at least 1,000 words for a master’s or 1,500 for a PhD, in Chinese or English. Download USTB’s official templates for the plan, health and guarantee forms. Our study-plan writing guide can help you turn your experience and proposed research into a connected explanation.
  4. Complete the CSC application. Enter through Campus China, select Type B and use USTB’s agency number, 10008. Our CSC agency-number guide explains this field. You can submit this initial form without USTB’s pre-admission letter.
  5. Submit the university application and fee. Complete the USTB online application and pay CNY 600. The fee is non-refundable. A supervisor’s acceptance letter and publications may support your application, but they are optional under this notice.
  6. Add the pre-admission letter when instructed. USTB will contact selected applicants and issue the letter for upload to CSC. Follow those instructions and monitor your email for the final decision.

My recommendation is to request your transcripts and recommendations while drafting the statement. Those tasks can run together, leaving you more time to check both forms before submitting.

05 Keep these two avoidable mistakes out of your application

Submit both forms before the scholarship deadline. Completing only CSC or only USTB leaves a required part unfinished. The university’s later general admission deadline does not give CSC applicants extra time.

Also use the scholarship’s under-35 and under-40 age limits. The older age limits in USTB’s general admission guide apply to other admission circumstances.

06 A few questions before you press submit

Do I need to send paper documents now?

No. USTB asks for online applications at this stage. Keep your original qualifications safe because you will need them for verification when registering.

Do postgraduate applicants need CSCA results?

No CSCA report is listed for this master’s and PhD application. The CSCA requirement in the combined notice concerns undergraduate applicants.

Should I leave out the financial-guarantee form because I want funding?

No. USTB includes it in the required application materials. Complete the university’s template alongside your scholarship application.

07 When should you submit for USTB’s 2027 scholarship?

The last date to apply for USTB’s 2027 CSC High-Level Postgraduate Programme is 10 March 2027. The application period runs from 1 November 2026 to 10 March 2027.

Admission documents are expected in July. USTB separately gives a provisional March–April 2027 window for Silk Road scholarships, subject to a further notice. Embassy applications follow each country’s own dates.

For now, choose your programme and start the documents that require help from your university or referees. You can compare other options through our 2027 CSC university deadline guide while preparing a thoughtful USTB application.
