What is the ADB-Japan Scholarship Program (JSP)?

The ADB-JSP is a highly competitive scholarship that provides around 135 graduate scholarships annually. This program aims to support students from ADB borrowing member countries and Japanese ODA scholarship-eligible countries. It covers full tuition fees, living expenses, medical insurance, and travel expenses, making it one of the most comprehensive scholarships available.

  • Law and Public Policy: International Business Law, International Environmental Law, Policy Studies, Political Science, Public Administration, and Public Policy.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for the ADB-JSP, you must:

  • Be a national of an ADB borrowing member country and a Japanese ODA scholarship-eligible country.
  • Not hold dual citizenship of any developed country.
  • Have gained admission to an approved master’s course at a Designated Institution.
  • Hold a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent with a superior academic record.
  • Have at least two years of full-time professional working experience.
  • Be proficient in oral and written English.
  • Be no more than 35 years old at the time of application (exceptions can be made in special cases).
  • Be in good health.
  • Agree to return to your home country and work for at least two years after completing your studies.
  • Not be an Executive Director, Alternate Director, management, staff, or consultant of ADB, or a close relative of the aforementioned.
  • Not be living or working in a country other than your home country.
  • Not be already enrolled in graduate degree programs.

Application Procedure

  1. Request Information: Contact your chosen partner institution for information and application forms.

  3. Submit Documents: Send the completed forms and academic records to the institution at least six months before the intended start date.
  4. Institution Evaluation: The institution evaluates and decides on admissions.
  5. Shortlist Submission: The institution sends a shortlist of candidates to ADB.
  6. ADB Review: ADB reviews submissions and recommends awardees.
  7. Approval: The Japanese executive director approves the recommended scholars.
  8. Notification: Institutions inform the scholars about their selection.

The scholarship is available to citizens from the following countries: Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Georgia, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kiribati, Kyrgyz Republic, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Maldives, Marshall Islands, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nauru, Nepal, Niue, Pakistan, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Tonga, Turkmenistan, Tuvalu, Uzbekistan, Vanuatu, and Viet Nam.
