Our article provides a detailed guide on the types of traineeships available, eligibility criteria, application process, and the financial support offered, empowering students to navigate and maximize this transformative professional opportunity.

The European Parliament facilitates two primary traineeships: the Secretariat Traineeships (also known as Schuman traineeships) and Traineeships with Members of the European Parliament. These programs are available in major EU cities such as Brussels, Luxembourg, and Strasbourg, as well as in various Liaison Offices across the Member States.

1# Schuman Traineeships 2024

Named after Robert Schuman, a pivotal figure in European integration, these traineeships are paid and aimed at enhancing both your academic learning and vocational skills. They offer a direct glimpse into the operational framework of the European Parliament, an essential institution in EU policymaking.

Fields of Work

Schuman traineeships cover a broad spectrum of areas including EU policies, finance, law, multilingualism, administration, and more. This diversity ensures valuable experiences regardless of your academic background.

Eligibility and Application Process

Eligible candidates must be over 18, hold a university degree, and have proficient language skills in two EU languages. The Schuman traineeship program prides itself on being inclusive, encouraging applications from all candidates irrespective of gender, ethnicity, or disability.

This financial support is designed to help cover living expenses during the traineeship as per this notice.

2# Traineeships with Members of the European Parliament (MEPs)

In addition to the Secretariat Traineeships, students have the opportunity to work directly with Members of the European Parliament (MEPs). These traineeships are based in Brussels or Strasbourg and offer a closer look at the daily functions and legislative processes driven by individual MEPs.

Why Apply?

Engaging in a traineeship with an MEP allows you to deepen your understanding of parliamentary operations and contribute to the legislative efforts of the European Parliament. These roles can vary widely, providing rich, hands-on experience in various legislative and policy areas depending on the MEP’s focus.

Eligibility and Application

Candidates must be at least 18 years old, possess at least a secondary school diploma, and have proficient language skills in one of the EU’s official languages. Applicants must not have any current employment contracts or previous traineeships or assistant roles with MEPs. Applications are to be made directly to MEPs, offering a personalized approach to securing a position.

Traineeship Duration and Compensation

These traineeships can last from six weeks up to five months, with the timing and duration determined by the MEP. Trainees receive a monthly grant ranging from EUR 921 to EUR 1510 for full-time positions, commensurate with the length and demands of the traineeship.
