Fully Funded PhD Scholarship at Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon (Class of 2025)

In an era where innovation drives sustainability, the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon, a global research powerhouse in Germany, is now calling ambitious minds from all around the world to apply for a fully funded PhD position in their Institute of Hydrogen Technology.

This is your chance to join a DFG-funded project unraveling atomic-scale secrets of high-performance magnesium (Mg) alloys — the future of lightweight, strong, and sustainable materials.

What’s the Project About?

This cutting-edge research dives deep into understanding why Mg-rare earth (RE) based alloys show exceptional strength and ductility. You’ll get hands-on experience with advanced microstructural characterization tools like EBSD, TEM, and SAXS, and perform ex situ/in situ nanoindentation-based tests — a perfect blend of experimental and analytical research.

The insights you generate will not only refine current materials but will also contribute to developing RE-free alloy systems and digital material twins, offering a direct impact on future hydrogen storage solutions, aerospace components, and mobility systems.

Your Ideal Profile

Are you a researcher who:

  • Holds a Master’s degree in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field?
  • Has deep understanding of metallurgy, slip/twinning, and mechanical behavior of metals?
  • Wants to work with Mg alloys and cutting-edge micro-compression and SEM-based methods?
  • Possesses strong problem-solving skills and a passion for collaborative innovation?

Then this position is made for you.

What You’ll Receive?

At Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon, expect not just research — expect a career-launching experience:

  • 36-month funded PhD with salary up to pay group 13 (TV EntgO Bund)
  • Full access to world-class labs and infrastructure
  • International research networking across 60+ nations
  • PhD Buddy Program for support and mentorship
  • Childcare facilities and flexible work policies
  • 6 weeks of holiday + company holidays
  • Free employee support services & canteen benefits
