Step 1: Which Type of Indian Applicant Are You?
A) You Have Completed Class XII
Do not immediately assume that your Indian Class XII certificate provides direct entry to a German bachelor’s degree. Your school board, subjects, grades, previous university study and examination history determine your route.
You may qualify through one of the recognized admission pathways, which can include successful completion of both JEE Main and JEE Advanced, eligible previous university study or a Studienkolleg followed by the Feststellungsprüfung.
If you need Studienkolleg, prepare German-language evidence even when your intended bachelor’s degree is taught in English. Most Studienkollegs teach and examine students in German.
B) You Have or Are Completing a Bachelor’s Degree
Your main task is to prove that your Indian bachelor’s degree matches the academic content of the German master’s. A university may examine your mathematics, programming, engineering, economics or research-method credits—not only your CGPA.
You should therefore collect your transcript, official grading system and detailed course descriptions before applications open. If your previous degree is in engineering, commerce, accounting, finance, economics, business or management, you must also check whether the new dMAT requirement applies.
C) You Have Completed a Master’s and Want a PhD
Your application will be judged mainly on research fit. Before sending generic emails to professors, define your research problem, prepare a credible proposal and identify researchers whose current work genuinely matches your topic.
You may apply to an advertised funded PhD position, a structured doctoral programme or an individual doctorate supervised by a professor. Each route uses a different application process.
Step 2: Which German Scholarships Can You Actually Target in 2027?

Step 3: Do You Need APS – Academic Evaluation Center India?
If your relevant qualifications were issued by Indian institutions, you should normally treat APS as part of your application plan. APS verifies your academic records; it does not admit you to a university or issue your visa.
Complete the APS India eligibility process early. Waiting for admission before thinking about APS can delay both university and visa applications.
You may be exempt in certain cases, including some PhD or postdoctoral routes, German or EU publicly funded scholarship holders, and applicants whose relevant qualification was issued outside India. Check the official rule before claiming an exemption.
Step 4: Does the New dMAT Rule Apply to You?
Ask yourself: Am I applying for a Master’s beginning in Summer Semester 2027 or later, and is my previous degree in an affected field?
If your answer is yes, you may need the Digital Master Test. The affected areas include selected programmes within:
- Engineering;
- Commerce;
- Accounting;
- Finance;
- Economics;
- Business; and
- Management.

Your research proposal should identify the problem, research gap, question, methodology, feasibility, expected contribution and fit with the German host institution.
Do not email a professor only to ask, “Do you have a scholarship?” Briefly explain your research question, relevant experience, proposed contribution and why that professor’s current work makes them an appropriate supervisor. |
Step 6: Decide Where to Submit Your Admission Application
Your university will use one of three routes:
- Direct university application: You upload everything to the university’s own portal.
- Standard uni-assist application: uni-assist evaluates your documents and forwards an eligible application to the university.
- VPD procedure: uni-assist evaluates your qualifications and issues a preliminary review document, which you then submit to the university yourself.
Do not assume that every German university uses uni-assist. Check the selected course page before creating or paying for an application.
uni-assist currently charges €75 for the first study choice and €30 for each additional choice in the same semester, unless the university pays the fee.
Step 7: Prepare the Correct Language Evidence
Your language requirement is determined by the selected university and programme—not by one national rule for all German admissions. Before booking a test, open the course page and check the accepted test name, overall score, component scores and result-validity period.
If Your Programme Is Taught in English
Many English-taught German Master’s programmes use IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 or TOEFL iBT 80–90 as their minimum range. Competitive courses may require IELTS 7.0, TOEFL iBT 95–100 or higher scores in individual components.

An MOI certificate is not a Germany-wide IELTS waiver. If the programme specifically demands IELTS, TOEFL or another named test, submitting only an MOI letter may leave your application incomplete.
If Your Programme Is Taught in German
Most German-taught degree programmes require proficiency equivalent to CEFR C1 at final enrolment. A B2 certificate may be sufficient for selected programmes, conditional admission, preparatory language study or a Studienkolleg application, but it should not be assumed to satisfy a C1-taught degree.

Your safest approach: copy the exact language requirement from each shortlisted course into your application tracker. Record the accepted test, overall minimum, component minimum, expiry rule and submission deadline. Do not rely on the requirement of another course—even when both programmes are offered by the same university.
Step 8: Apply for Admission and Scholarship in the Correct Order
Before pressing submit, ask:
- Does this scholarship require admission first?
- Is scholarship consideration automatic?
- Must I apply to the scholarship and university separately?
- Does the scholarship use an earlier deadline than the course?
- Must my referee submit the letter directly?
For example, Deutschlandstipendium applications are managed by individual universities, while many DAAD schemes require their own funding application. RWTH’s Women in Engineering Scholarship must be requested with the programme application. Erasmus Mundus programmes usually combine admission and scholarship consideration through the consortium’s system.
Your Personal 2027 Preparation Calendar for All German Scholarships
If You Want Summer Semester 2027 Admission
You should already be checking active programmes. Complete APS immediately, determine whether dMAT applies, finalize your language result and submit applications between October 2026 and January 2027 according to each university’s deadline.
If You Want Winter Semester 2027–2028 Admission
Use September–December 2026 to complete APS, dMAT, language testing and course research. Prepare university applications from early 2027 and expect many submission windows between March and July 2027.
If You Want a 2027 Scholarship
Do not wait for the general university deadline. Several DAAD and Erasmus Mundus awards close months before standard university admissions. Build a separate calendar containing the scholarship opening date, funding deadline, university deadline and referee deadline.
Step 9: What Happens After You Receive Admission?
Once admitted, read every condition in your offer. You may still need to submit a final degree, language result, certified copy or tuition deposit before enrolment.
For your German student visa from India, prepare:
- Admission letter;
- APS certificate unless an exemption applies;
- Academic qualifications;
- Language evidence;
- CV;
- Visa motivation letter;
- Health-insurance evidence;
- Proof of tuition payment where applicable; and
- Proof of financial resources.
The published 2026 blocked-account reference is €11,904, with a maximum monthly withdrawal of €992. A qualifying German or EU scholarship or a formal declaration of commitment may provide an alternative.
