Mechatronic Engineering Scholarship 2027–2029: by Erasmus Mundus (EU4M) Project

Want to build the systems that connect mechanical design, electronics and intelligent control? Applications are open for the EU4M Erasmus Mundus Joint Master in Mechatronic Engineering, with scholarships available for the 2027–2029 intake and study routes across Spain, Germany, France and Sweden.

Coordinated by the Universidad de Oviedo, EU4M is a two-year, 120-ECTS engineering master’s combining technical study, international mobility and a research or design thesis. Its distinctive requirement is multilingual study: English alone is not sufficient. Which country combination fits your language skills, and should you request full funding or also accept a tuition waiver? Start with those decisions.

EU4M 2027: Your route into European mechatronics
Status: Scholarship applications open for 2027–2029.
Applicants: European and non-European candidates with a relevant engineering degree; final-year students may apply conditionally.
Qualification: Full-time master’s; four semesters, 120 ECTS.
Funding: Full scholarships include participation costs and a monthly allowance; fee-waiver awards exclude living-cost funding.
Languages: At least two programme teaching languages; route-specific proficiency applies.
Application fee: No student application fee under EMJM funding rules; document and language-test expenses may remain.
Timing: Apply during the scholarship round; the later self-funded round does not extend scholarship consideration. See all deadlines.
Official information checked: 20 October 2026.

Four countries. A route through at least two.

These are EU4M’s European teaching destinations. Your approved itinerary determines where you study; enrolment does not mean visiting all four.

🇪🇸 SPAIN — Universidad de Oviedo
Teaching: Spanish · Specialisation: system analysis and mechatronics in production development.

🇩🇪 GERMANY — Hochschule Karlsruhe
Teaching: German · Specialisation: microtechnology and energy efficiency.

🇫🇷 FRANCE — SUPMICROTECH-ENSMM, Besançon
Teaching: French · Specialisation: mechatronics, robotics and micro-mechatronics.

🇸🇪 SWEDEN — University of Skövde
Teaching: English · Specialisation: virtual product realisation.

EU4M’s official programme and mobility guidance requires qualifying study periods in two countries different from your country of residence, each worth at least 30 ECTS.

You normally spend the first year at one partner, then move for second-year specialisation. The final semester includes a 30-ECTS thesis, which may involve a partner university or an associated organisation. The EU4M study plan explains this progression. I would choose your route around the engineering skills you want to develop and the languages you can document.

If you are comparing programmes before committing, our Erasmus Mundus 2027–2028 application guide explains how consortium applications, mobility and scholarship selection fit together.

01EU4M needs engineering preparation and two teaching languages

You need a bachelor’s degree or equivalent of at least 180 ECTS in a relevant engineering subject. The official admission criteria name mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, mechatronics, automotive/aerospace, sensor technologies and related scientific engineering fields. A strong academic record matters; professional experience is desirable.

Your language evidence must match your intended destinations: at application, the minimum is B1 in the first-year teaching language and A2 in the second-country teaching language. B2 in the first-year language is recommended. Sweden teaches in English, so English plus suitable Spanish, German or French can support a route; English alone cannot.

This is a practical eligibility test before you invest in an application. If you need an English-taught alternative in an adjacent technical field, explore the CoDaS master’s in communications and data science, which has a different curriculum and admissions calendar.

02Which EU4M scholarship would make your study affordable?

The full scholarship includes €1,400 per month for up to 24 months, while a fee waiver does not provide that allowance. EU4M’s scholarship funding page includes tuition, full insurance and mandatory participation costs within scholarship coverage. The monthly payment contributes to travel, installation and subsistence; budget those expenses together.

The distinction below matters because the application asks whether you would also accept a fee-waiver award.

Admission/funding outcome Tuition position Living-cost position
Full scholarship Tuition covered Monthly allowance; maximum calculated total €33,600 over 24 months
Fee-waiver scholarship Tuition covered You fund living, travel and other remaining expenses
Self-funded admission Published full-programme tuition: €9,000 for European students; €18,000 for non-European students You fund your living and mobility costs

The self-funded amounts come from EU4M’s tuition schedule. My recommendation is to accept fee-waiver consideration only if you have a realistic way to finance two years of living and mobility expenses. Admission and an affordable funding offer are separate decisions.

European and non-European students can compete for scholarships. Previous recipients of an Erasmus Mundus master’s or the other Erasmus Mundus awards specified in the EU4M scholarship eligibility guidance cannot receive another EACEA scholarship.

03Submit one EU4M application with your funding preference

Apply directly through the consortium’s system; there is no separate student application to the European Commission. EU4M’s application instructions use an online submission followed by hard-copy documentation only for selected candidates.

  1. Choose a feasible mobility route. Match your engineering interests and language evidence to the teaching destinations above. Destination preferences remain subject to consortium allocation.
  2. Prepare your academic and identity evidence. Assemble your degree or final-year evidence, transcripts, passport and language documentation for the portal’s attachment fields.
  3. Build a concise supporting file. EU4M prefers a Europass CV, requires signed references and imposes a strict 250-word motivation-letter limit. Use our scholarship CV guide to select relevant achievements, and our motivation-letter guidance for planning, while keeping EU4M’s word limit.
  4. Brief your referees. Our recommendation-letter guide can help explain the evidence a referee might discuss. Their assessment should reflect work they know.
  5. Register and submit. Create credentials in the official EU4M application portal, complete the form, upload documents and indicate whether you want only full funding or would also accept a fee waiver. Submit before the scholarship deadline and retain confirmation.
  6. Follow selection instructions. If selected, complete the requested validated documentation and placement acceptance. Official documents outside English, Spanish, French or German require the corresponding legalized or sworn translation.

I would use your limited motivation-letter space to connect one concrete engineering project, the EU4M specialization you need and the work you want to pursue afterward. That gives the committee a clear reason for your route.

04EU4M application exceptions worth understanding

The consortium’s applicant FAQ clarifies these preparation decisions.

Can I apply before completing my bachelor’s?

Yes, final-year students may receive conditional admission. Include an institutional statement confirming final-year enrolment and expected completion; supply the degree certificate before enrolment.

Can missing language certificates be supplied later?

Conditional selection may be possible, but candidates with the required certificates rank ahead. EU4M may assess spoken proficiency; this exception does not create an English-only route.

Must I legalise my degree before applying?

Degree legalization is not required at the initial application stage. Admitted candidates must subsequently legalize their bachelor’s diploma and follow the consortium’s document instructions.
