The University of Glasgow invites applications for the RESPECT PhD Scholarship, offering an exciting opportunity to contribute to the interdisciplinary £4.5m UKRI-funded Land Use for Net Zero project, focusing on restoring damaged peatlands in the UK.
This PhD position will allow you to work alongside a talented team of researchers in addressing critical challenges related to climate change and land use.
About the Project
Peatlands, the world’s largest terrestrial carbon store, play a vital role in combating climate change. However, 80% of UK peatlands are in poor condition, transforming from carbon sinks to carbon sources. The UK government aims to restore significant areas of peatland by 2050, but large-scale restoration efforts have faced significant obstacles. The RESPECT project aims to facilitate peatland restoration on agricultural land, tackling these challenges through transdisciplinary research.
The selected PhD candidate will join Work Package 2: Social Capacities for Peatland Transformations. You will explore landowner and land manager motivations, stakeholder engagement, and design innovative approaches like walking interviews and scenario mapping workshops. Your research will help create frameworks for engaging stakeholders in peatland restoration across various regions.
Scholarship Benefits:
- Full UKRI rate stipend for three years (full-time).
- Tuition fees at the standard home rate.
- Research Training Support Grant (up to £940 per year).
Eligibility:
