APF Canada Media Fellowship Program 2025

Are you a journalist with a passion for storytelling and a curiosity for Asia’s rapidly evolving political, economic, and technological landscapes? The Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada (APF Canada) is now accepting applications for its Spring 2026 Media Fellowship Program — a prestigious opportunity for Canadian journalists to report on critical developments in Asia and Canada-Asia relations.

What Is the APF Canada Media Fellowship?

This competitive fellowship invites both up-and-coming and seasoned Canadian journalists to spend time in Asia exploring timely, underreported, or insightful stories. Funded through an endowment from the Government of Canada, the fellowship enables recipients to research, report, and publish high-impact journalism on issues that resonate across the Asia-Pacific region and influence Canada-Asia ties.

Since its inception, the program has supported 98 fellows, including some of Canada’s most prominent journalists like Carol Off and Chantal Hébert.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for the APF Canada Media Fellowship, applicants must be either Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents. They should be currently employed by, or working as freelancers for, a recognized Canadian media outlet—whether in print, digital, television, radio, or multimedia platforms.

A minimum of two years of professional journalism experience is required, along with a demonstrated record of publication in Canadian news media. Applicants must also ensure they possess, or are eligible to obtain, all necessary travel and work visas for the country or countries they plan to visit in Asia. It is important to note that previous recipients of the APF Media Fellowship must wait a period of three (03) years before reapplying.

  • Maritime & Arctic Governance

Deliverables Expected from Fellows

  • A minimum of 3 feature stories, with at least one focused on digital platforms.
  • A short-form multimedia piece (e.g., podcast, video, or blog) summarizing the experience.
  • An active social media campaign to promote the stories.
  • A final written report (700–1,000 words) evaluating the experience.
  • Optional: Participate in a presentation at APF Canada’s offices in Vancouver or Toronto.
