Germany-US Research Frontiers Symposium 2027 for Engineering Inviting Applicants

Applications are officially open for the Germany-US Frontiers of Research Symposium 2027, a fully funded academic gathering that will bring together 60 researchers from Germany and the United States in Karlsruhe next March.

The programme is designed for early- and mid-career researchers in engineering and applied sciences who are currently based in Germany. Selected participants will attend a four-day interdisciplinary symposium in Karlsruhe from 10–13 March 2027, where discussions will focus on sustainable technologies, climate adaptation engineering, synthetic biology, advanced manufacturing, and the role of AI in engineering education and practice. Travel, hotel accommodation, and meals are covered by the organisers.

One important feature that may attract applicants is the built-in networking structure. Every participant will present research posters, join interdisciplinary sessions, and take part in guided visits to research facilities at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). What Funding and Support Are Included?

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation will fully cover core participation costs for selected researchers from Germany.

The support package includes:

  • Hotel accommodation for three nights during the symposium
  • Meals throughout the event
  • Round-trip travel reimbursement within Germany
  • Access to all symposium sessions and networking activities
  • Eligibility for the post-symposium CONNECT collaboration funding programme

Participants who later develop collaborative projects with US-based researchers from the symposium may also apply for CONNECT funding, which supports short-term research visits of up to 30 days between Germany and the United States.

Importantly, this is not a degree scholarship or long-term fellowship. It is a research networking and collaboration programme aimed at researchers already active in academia or industry.

Who Can Apply and Who May Be Most Competitive?

The opportunity is open to researchers working in Germany either at research institutions or in industry. Applicants must have completed their PhD within the past 12 years by the time the symposium takes place and must demonstrate fluency in English.

Because the symposium focuses heavily on interdisciplinary sustainability challenges, candidates whose work overlaps multiple fields may have an advantage. Researchers working at the intersection of engineering, AI, climate science, biotechnology, advanced manufacturing, or infrastructure resilience are likely to align closely with the programme’s objectives.

The selection process will evaluate:
