Who Can Apply for the NPU CSC Scholarship 2027?

The NPU University Program is available to non-Chinese citizens applying for an eligible master’s or PhD programme. Candidates must meet NPU’s academic, language, research and supervisor requirements.

  • Master’s applicants: Must hold an appropriate bachelor’s degree.
  • PhD applicants: Must hold an appropriate master’s degree.
  • Academic performance: NPU’s currently linked guides require at least a 75% average for admission and normally 80% or above for CSC consideration.
  • Master’s supervisor acceptance: Compulsory for applicants to specified NPU schools and an advantage for other applicants.
  • PhD supervisor acceptance: Compulsory for all doctoral candidates.
  • Research record: Publications, patents or recognized research awards are compulsory for PhD applicants.

The admission guides currently linked by the university use age limits of under 30 for master’s applicants and under 35 for PhD applicants. However, those pages still contain 2026 reference dates. Candidates should check the updated 2027 master’s and PhD guides before making a final eligibility decision.

Not every NPU degree is available under CSC Type B. Applicants must select a programme marked with an asterisk on the university’s eligible-major list.

Can You Apply to NPU Without IELTS?

Native English speakers applying for English-taught programmes can apply without an English test certificate, but NPU does not currently publish a general IELTS exemption based only on an English Medium of Instruction letter.

Other applicants for English-taught master’s and PhD programmes are presently expected to provide one of the following:

  • IELTS Academic: Overall 6.5, with no component below 5.5;
  • TOEFL: Overall score of 90 or above;
  • Duolingo English Test: 120 or above; or
  • PTE Academic: 60 or above.

Applicants to Chinese-taught programmes are generally required to hold HSK Level 5 with a score of at least 200. These language scores should be rechecked against the final 2027 programme guide.

How Does the NPU CSC Two-Portal Application Work?

You must complete NPU’s selection process and the CSC Type B application; submitting through only one portal is insufficient.

  1. Check the NPU master’s and PhD programmes eligible for the University Program.
  2. Contact a potential NPU supervisor and obtain an acceptance letter where compulsory.
  3. Create an account on the NPU international application portal.
  4. Upload the required documents and submit the university application before the relevant deadline.
  5. Complete NPU’s document reviews, interviews and comprehensive assessment.
  6. Obtain an NPU pre-admission notice if selected for CSC recommendation.
  7. Apply through the Chinese Government Scholarship Information System.
  8. Select Program Category Type B and enter NPU agency number 10699.
  9. Wait for NPU and the China Scholarship Council to complete the final assessment.

NPU will recommend candidates to CSC in batches. Applicants who submit early with complete documents may therefore receive earlier consideration.

  1. I am Hassan Emmanuel Junior Turay, residing in Sierra Leone. I hold a BSc in Math and Statistics, a postgraduate diploma in Statistics, and a Master of Science in Applied Mathematics from Fourah Bay College University of Sierra Leone. I am seeking help to pursue a PhD in math (modelling).

    1. Hi Hassan—thanks for sharing your background. For NPU’s 2027 fully funded scholarship, PhD applicants generally need an appropriate master’s degree, which you appear to have (MSc Applied Mathematics). You should also check that your proposed research area fits a supervisor at NPU and that you meet the university’s language and research requirements. If you can, tell me your current transcript/grades and whether your target program is specifically “math modeling,” and I can suggest what to emphasize in your application (research plan/SOP).
