Opening on 1 November 2026 for Autumn 2027 entry, it offers CHF 13,500 per semester, a tuition-fee waiver, mentorship and an influential academic network. Yet the window closes just 30 days later. What ESOP actually pays for?
ESOP is a full-cost Master’s scholarship, not merely a tuition discount. From Autumn Semester 2027, selected scholars receive CHF 13,500 per semester to support living and study expenses, as well as a tuition-fee waiver. The support lasts for the regular three- or four-semester duration of the chosen Master’s programme.
ETH Zurich also connects scholars with mentorship and the ETH Foundation network. However, the scholarship does not automatically fund study beyond the normal programme length. An exchange semester, assistantship or internship that extends the degree can leave the student responsible for the additional costs.
Who can apply—and who cannot?
You should apply if you are seeking admission to an eligible ETH Zurich Master’s programme and can credibly demonstrate top-decile Bachelor’s performance. The scholarship is open in the first application window to applicants with international Bachelor’s degrees and to ETH Bachelor’s students applying for a consecutive Master’s programme.
- You must be applying for a Master’s degree, not a Master of Advanced Studies.
- Your Bachelor’s academic result should place you in the top 10% of your cohort, which ETH describes as Grade A.
- You must be reachable through the telephone number listed in your CV because interviews may take place by phone or video in February 2027.
- You cannot apply if you are already enrolled in an ETH Zurich Master’s programme or already hold a Master’s degree.
- Only ETH Bachelor’s students may begin ESOP with a leave of absence.
Approximately 60 ESOP scholarships are planned for the 2027/28 academic year, although the final number depends on available funds. This is a highly selective funding decision made after evaluation by the relevant Master’s admissions committee and the ETH Rector.
Is IELTS required for ETH Zurich ESOP?
IELTS is required only if your chosen ETH Zurich Master’s programme requires English proof and you do not qualify for an exemption. ESOP has no separate English-test rule.
ETH accepts:
- IELTS Academic/IELTS Online: 7.0 overall, minimum 6.0 in every section.
- TOEFL iBT/Home Edition: 5.0 for tests taken after 21 January 2026; 100 under the earlier scoring scale.
- Cambridge C1 Advanced: Grade B, minimum 193.
- Cambridge C2 Proficiency: Grade C, minimum 200.
IELTS, TOEFL and C1 Advanced must be no more than two years old. Applicants are exempt if their entire Bachelor’s degree was taught only in English and this is officially confirmed by their university. No extra confirmation is needed for degrees from Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK or the US.
Some ETH Master’s programmes also require German, so check your programme’s exact admission requirements before applying.
The document that can make or break an ESOP application
The ESOP pre-proposal is not a generic statement of purpose. Alongside the normal Master’s admission documents, applicants must upload a self-developed pre-proposal for their intended Master’s thesis. It must follow established scientific citation practice and demonstrate that the candidate can think independently at a research level.
Plagiarism, negligent misinformation or intentional false information can result in exclusion from admission or the later withdrawal of admission and scholarship. If the chosen Master’s programme does not require references, the applicant must name two professors who can upload reference letters after receiving ETH’s system email.
How to apply for ETH Zurich Scholarship in 2027?
- Choose an eligible ETH Zurich Master’s programme and verify its academic, language and document requirements.
- Assess honestly whether your Bachelor’s record places you in the top 10% of your graduating cohort.
- Prepare the standard Master’s application documents and any official translations required by ETH Zurich.
- Write an original, properly cited Master’s thesis pre-proposal using ETH’s published guidelines.
- Arrange two professor references if your study programme does not otherwise request them.
- Submit the Master’s admission and ESOP application together through ETH Zurich eApply during the first application window.
- Keep the phone number in your CV active during February 2027 and await the scholarship decision, expected by the end of March.
