ACES Scholarships Opportunity 2024 Available for Application Submission
Are you a college student with a passion for editing? The ACES Education Fund offers six prestigious scholarships annually to students who excel in critical thinking and aspire to careers in editing. These scholarships honor the legacies of Merv Aubespin and Bill Walsh, two influential figures in the editing community.
Scholarship Overview
Since its inception in 1999, the ACES Education Fund has awarded over 150 scholarships to deserving students who demonstrate a passion for editing. These scholarships are funded by the generosity of donors and are designed to support students who excel in the craft of editing, whether it be in news or any other written materials.
1# Merv Aubespin Scholarship: Named after the late Merv Aubespin, this scholarship is awarded to one student who shows exceptional promise in editing. The Aubespin Scholar receives $2,500.
2# Bill Walsh Scholarship: In honor of the late Bill Walsh, a longtime copy editor at the Washington Post, this scholarship is awarded to a student who demonstrates excellence in news editing. The recipient of the Walsh Scholarship receives $3,500.
3# Five Additional ACES Scholarships: Five other scholarships, each worth $1,500, are awarded to students who excel in editing across various fields.
Benefits
All six scholarship winners receive:
- Monetary Awards: $1,500 to $3,500 depending on the scholarship.
- Conference Support: Eligibility for financial aid to attend the ACES annual in-person national conference, providing an excellent networking opportunity with industry professionals.
Eligibility
To apply for the ACES Scholarships, including the Walsh Scholarship, applicants must:
- Be enrolled as juniors, seniors, or graduate students in a college or university by the application deadline.
- Have a demonstrated interest in editing as a career.
- Apply regardless of nationality, residence, or field of study. However, previous winners, ACES Board members, administrators, and their families are not eligible.
Application Process
Application Period: Application submission window for ACES and Walsh scholarship will open on August 15, 2024, and its submission deadline will be on November 15, 2024, at 11:59 p.m. ET. During this period, students can apply for both the ACES and Walsh Scholarships here https://aceseditors.org/awards/scholarships, but may win only one.
Judging Process: The selection process involves two steps:
- Initial Screening: In December, two panels of five judges each will select finalists based on the application portfolios.
- Editing Test: In early January 2025, finalists will take a timed editing test. The results will be added to their portfolios, and a second round of judging will determine the winners.
