ANU University Research Scholarships 2027 Open for Global Students

A research degree in Australia can cost heavily before the first thesis chapter is even written, but the Australian National University is offering high-performing HDR candidates a 2027 funding route with a stipend valued at AUD 39,069 per year, plus relocation and research-related allowances.

The ANU University Research Scholarships 2027 support domestic and international postgraduate research students whose work aligns with the University’s strategic research priorities. The award is for prospective and recently commenced Higher Degree by Research candidates, including PhD and other accredited HDR students. It provides a fortnightly stipend, selected allowances, and paid leave provisions, but applicants should understand that selection is merit-based and highly comparative.

A Research Scholarship Built Around HDR Talent

The Australian National University runs two central scholarship rounds each year, and the University Research Scholarship is assessed alongside other major centrally managed awards such as the AGRTP. That matters because applicants are not simply being checked for minimum eligibility; they are being ranked against other strong research candidates in the same round.

The scholarship is open across all fields of study, making it relevant for applicants in sciences, humanities, social sciences, policy, engineering, environment, health, and interdisciplinary research. ANU’s strength as one of Australia’s leading research universities also makes this award particularly attractive for students whose proposals require serious supervision, institutional research infrastructure, and a competitive academic environment.

What the Funding Actually Covers?

The headline financial benefit is the annual stipend of AUD 39,069, based on the 2026 full-time base stipend rate. Payments are made fortnightly, giving research students a regular income while they complete their programme.

The scholarship is normally paid for 3.5 years, with a possible six-month extension. In addition to the stipend, ANU lists travel and removal allowances for students relocating to Canberra, a thesis allowance, a dependant child allowance for international students, and paid medical, maternity, and parental leave.

This makes the award strong on living-cost support, especially for candidates moving to Canberra. However, applicants should not casually assume that every possible cost is automatically covered. Visa expenses, health cover, accommodation, and other personal costs should be checked carefully against the final scholarship conditions and admission package.

Who Can Compete for the 2027 Round?

The award is available to domestic and international students enrolled in an accredited Higher Degree by Research course at ANU. Prospective candidates may apply, and continuing candidates are also considered if they have only recently commenced and are typically enrolled for less than one year full-time equivalent.

The academic threshold is high: applicants must have achieved at least Honours H1 or an H1-equivalent result in prior study. Candidates receiving a full-time salary as Industry PhD candidates are not eligible, which is an important restriction for applicants already attached to industry-funded doctoral pathways.

English language competency is also considered during selection, so international applicants should treat language evidence as part of their competitiveness, not merely as an administrative requirement.

Why Selection Will Not Be Automatic?

ANU Colleges convene selection committees to score and rank eligible applicants. The process looks beyond grades alone and considers academic record, research potential, support from the prospective supervisor, the suitability of the research location, referee reports, English language competency, and the strength of other applications in the same round.

That means an applicant with excellent marks but a weak research fit may still struggle. A strong supervisor match, convincing research direction, and polished references can make a real difference in a crowded scholarship round.

Application Rounds and Deadlines

The main application deadline for Round 1 International applicants for ANU University Research Scholarships 2027 is 31 August 2026.
