China University of Petroleum (Beijing) offers a scholarship with tuition, accommodation and insurance support for international bachelor’s, master’s and PhD students. First-Class recipients also receive a living allowance; Second-Class recipients need their own living-cost budget.
The China University of Petroleum (Beijing)–Beijing Government Foreign Students Scholarship covers all university majors, including options beyond petroleum such as computing, chemical engineering and management. Its standing rules are published, but a dated 2027 application window is not yet verified.

01 First Class or Second Class: what changes?
Both classes cover tuition, accommodation and comprehensive health insurance; only First Class pays a monthly allowance. The distinction matters before you commit to studying in Beijing.

Accommodation type is assigned by the university. Annual scholarship assessment is compulsory; skipping it without a valid reason can end continued funding. My recommendation is to budget for travel, visa, application costs and any living-cost gap before accepting an award.

02 Who qualifies for the CUP Beijing scholarship?
Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens, healthy, law-abiding and without a criminal record. The scholarship page requires an academic average above 70%, plus the qualification needed for the chosen degree.
- Bachelor’s: High-school graduation and age under 25; English route IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 75+, or equivalent evidence; Chinese route HSK 4 at 222+.
- Master’s: Bachelor’s degree and age under 35; English route IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 80+, or equivalent evidence; Chinese route HSK 5 or above.
- PhD: Master’s degree and the same postgraduate language requirements. The scholarship page says under 45, but the latest 2026 doctoral admission guide says under 40; applicants aged 40–44 need written eligibility clearance.
Applicants from countries where English is an official language are exempt from English-proof submission for English-taught majors. The latest undergraduate guide also requires CSCA results; prepare for that assessment while awaiting the next intake’s instructions.

03 How to prepare and submit a CUP Beijing application
Apply through CUP Beijing’s university system for this scholarship. Its procedure is separate from CSC, which has its own application requirements.
- Choose your programme and funding route. Read the official scholarship rules and latest degree guides. Confirm the available intake, teaching language and any programme-specific conditions.
- Arrange academic support. Use the university’s research-plan and supervisor templates. PhD supervisor acceptance is mandatory. Although the scholarship page recommends it for master’s applicants, the 2026 master’s guide makes it compulsory and requires a supervisor-signed plan. I would secure both before submission. - Prepare the document set. Include passport/China travel records, white-background photograph, qualifications and transcripts, language evidence, study/research plan, medical form with laboratory/X-ray reports, police clearance and two postgraduate recommendations. Prospective graduates can supply official expected-graduation evidence. Notarise/translate documents as required; the latest degree guides also request bank reference letters, with no blanket scholarship-applicant exemption stated.
- Submit when your intake is available. Register through the university-linked application portal, upload the complete application and follow the published RMB 400 fee instructions. - Follow review and interview instructions. Monitor your account and email. The official admissions FAQ explains that pre-admission precedes teaching-college and scholarship review; it does not confirm an award.

04 Three questions before you commit
Can I also apply for a CSC scholarship?
Yes. CUP Beijing encourages eligible applicants to pursue multiple scholarship routes, but the final result confirms only one scholarship. Complete each route’s required procedure rather than assuming one application covers both.
Can an English-medium certificate replace IELTS?
The university FAQ accepts evidence of more than two years of previous English-medium study. However, its latest 2026 degree guides emphasise test certificates and native/official-language exemptions; obtain written approval before relying solely on an English-medium certificate.
Does meeting the minimum average guarantee First Class?
No. Selection is competitive and merit-based, and meeting admission conditions does not determine your award class. Make your academic record, research plan and interview explanation support the same clear programme choice.

05 CUP Beijing scholarship deadline guidance
The standing China University of Petroleum (Beijing)–Beijing Government Foreign Students Scholarship page lists 15 May for undergraduate applications and 30 May for master’s and PhD applications. These are undated standing deadlines, not verified 2027 closing dates. A 2027 opening date and cycle-specific deadline have not yet been confirmed.
