Eligibility and Application Criteria

The Matsumae Research Fellowship is specifically designed for non-Japanese nationals who align with the fellowship’s core values and meet the following criteria:

  • Hold a Ph.D. (Doctoral degree).
  • Are 45 years old or younger at the time of application (born in/after 1979).
  • Have sufficient proficiency in English or Japanese.
  • Must not have lived in Japan for extended periods, excluding short-term stays like tourism or conferences.
  • Currently employed in their home country, with a commitment to return after the fellowship.

Key Requirements

Applicants must secure acceptance from a host institution in Japan prior to applying. These institutions can range from universities to national research institutions or relevant facilities in the private sector.

Financial Benefits of Fellowship

Successful applicants receive:

  • A monthly allowance of JPY 220,000 to cover living expenses and research activities.
  • A one-time arrival fund of JPY 120,000 for initial costs.
  • Round-trip economy class airfare from their home country to Tokyo, Japan.
  • Overseas travel insurance covering medical treatment and death benefits.

Additional Opportunities: The fellowship includes a unique study tour, allowing recipients to deepen their understanding of Japan and its culture.

Fellowship Duration: The fellowship must be undertaken for six months between April 2025 and March 2026, with specific start and end dates to be indicated in the application.

Application Process – How to Apply?

Applications must be submitted via email to the Matsumae International Foundation (MIF) within the designated period till June 30, 2024.

Required Documents: Applicants need to prepare several documents, including:

  • A completed application form with a recent ID photograph.
  • An essay outlining the reasons for applying (approximately 500 words).
  • A detailed research plan discussing the content, purpose, methodology, and expected benefits of the research to their home country.
  • Curriculum Vitae and a list of publications.
  • Recommendation letter from their current employer.
  • Invitation letter from the host professor in Japan.
  • Academic certificates and diplomas with English translations.

Screening and Results: Applications are evaluated based on academic value and research project perfection by the MIF Screening Committee. The results will be announced on the MIF website in late November 2024
