01 What does the Tongji CSC doctoral scholarship pay for?

The CSC award covers tuition, comprehensive medical insurance, a doctoral living allowance and accommodation support. Tongji lists RMB 3,500 monthly for doctoral students. If campus accommodation is full, recipients arranging their own housing can apply for an off-campus subsidy of RMB 1,000 monthly.

If you need to rent privately, compare the subsidy with the rent before committing to a lease. Continuing recipients must pass the annual scholarship review.

02 Which Tongji doctoral subjects can you choose?

You may choose one major from Tongji’s 2027 international doctoral catalogue. It lists 112 programme entries across 26 schools and institutes, counting some majors separately by teaching language.

  • Engineering and technology include materials science, civil engineering, transportation engineering, software engineering, mechanical engineering, and information and communication engineering.
  • Science, environment and health options include mathematics, marine sciences, environmental science and engineering, biology, and medical specialties.
  • Humanities, design and social sciences options include philosophy, foreign languages and literature, design, intellectual property research, and political science.

Among the catalogue’s 20 English-taught entries are Civil Engineering, Software Engineering, Mathematics and Philosophy. Many programmes last four years, while some professional medical doctorates last three. Match the major code, language and departmental conditions before you apply.

I would choose the programme before drafting the personal statement. That gives you a specific department to research and lets you explain how your master’s work prepares you for the question you want to investigate.

03 Who qualifies, and is IELTS compulsory at Tongji?

Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens in good health and meet Tongji’s doctoral academic and language requirements. A master’s degree is required. Graduating master’s students can apply with official proof of expected graduation and present their final certificates at registration.

Tongji states that scholarship applicants must be 40 or under, while CSC’s general guidance says under 40. If you are already 40, obtain written clarification from Tongji’s graduate admissions contact, [email protected], before paying. Self-funded applicants have a separate age ceiling of 50.

  • English-taught doctorates accept TOEFL iBT 80 or above, IELTS overall 6.0 or above, or evidence that a previous degree programme used English as its medium of instruction or working language.
  • Chinese-taught doctorates require HSK Level 5 with at least 180 points or a higher level. If your master’s degree was taught in Chinese, Tongji accepts certification of that teaching language instead of the HSK certificate.

Joint-development programme participants are excluded from the High-Level Postgraduate award, and recipients cannot simultaneously hold another Chinese government scholarship. Tongji also instructs applicants who have already applied to other universities in the CSC system not to apply to Tongji under this call.

04 What should your Tongji application folder contain?

Prepare electronic uploads for Tongji and the CSC scholarship system, then retain the originals for registration. Use Tongji’s personal statement template to present your study plan for university admission.

Document How to prepare it correctly
Passport Upload the information page. Tongji specifies validity through at least 1 March 2028. CSC’s general rule asks for 12 months from the intended study start. For Fall 2027, renew through at least the corresponding month in 2028 if necessary.
Degrees and transcripts Provide master’s graduation and degree certificates or official proof of expected graduation. Upload original or notarized transcripts covering both bachelor’s and master’s study. Documents in languages other than Chinese or English require notarized translations.
Personal statement and study plan Use Tongji’s postgraduate template in the programme’s teaching language. CSC’s general postgraduate guidance specifies at least 800 words for the study plan or research proposal. Follow any stricter instructions in Tongji’s CSC checklist or your department’s materials.
Language evidence and references Upload the applicable language proof and two recommendations from associate professors or scholars of equivalent rank or above, including their contact details.
Medical and police records Tongji requires the Foreigner Physical Examination Form within six months. CSC additionally requires a valid non-criminal-record certificate, usually issued within six months before submission.
Payment and additional evidence Upload a remittance voucher if paying by bank transfer outside the portal. Add required departmental supplements and relevant research or award evidence in the appropriate upload fields.

A supervisor letter depends on your scholarship route and department. Tongji’s general doctoral checklist lists it among additional materials. If you are seeking a Tongji pre-admission notice for CSC Type A, you must upload a letter signed by your intended supervisor. For Type B, follow any additional requirements for your chosen programme.

I recommend requesting transcripts and referee letters first, then scheduling your medical examination and police certificate around submission. Keep Tongji’s required template when drafting your research case. For help structuring the draft, see our Chinese scholarship study-plan guide.

05 How do you submit the Tongji CSC application?

Complete both Tongji’s university application and the CSC Type B scholarship application.

  1. Choose your doctoral programme. Use the catalogue’s exact programme name and teaching language, and prepare any departmental additions. Start with the 2027 Tongji doctoral enrollment guide and its Major List navigation.
  2. Submit to Tongji and pay. Choose the Chinese Government Scholarship route, select one major, upload your documents and pay the RMB 600 fee through the Tongji University Online Registration System.
  3. Complete the CSC submission in parallel. Select Type B and Tongji’s agency number 10247. Submit the scholarship materials and download the generated application form from the CSC scholarship application system.
  4. Watch for the interview and pre-admission instructions. Monitor Tongji’s portal for the departmental interview. If Tongji issues a pre-admission document, upload it to CSC within the timeframe the university gives you. CSC makes the final scholarship decision after reviewing Tongji’s nominations.

For the scholarship instructions and document attachments, see Tongji’s High-Level Postgraduate notice. The national document rules are in the CSC-issued general application checklist.

06 What else should Tongji scholarship applicants know?

Can Tongji consider me for another route if my CSC application is unsuccessful?

Yes. Tongji’s scholarship notice says it may consider unsuccessful applicants for other scholarships or self-funded admission based on the preferences they entered. Select only options you could realistically afford if offered.

Can I apply directly without an agent?

Yes. Tongji’s published procedure allows you to register, upload documents and pay through its own application system. Keep control of your account so interview invitations and additional requests reach you.

What does the Shanghai Municipal Government Scholarship cover?

Both categories cover tuition and medical insurance. Category A also offers doctoral recipients RMB 3,500 per month and accommodation support. Read the named scholarship and category on any offer before deciding whether it meets your budget.

Can you apply for Tongji’s Silk Road Scholarship yet?

The doctoral guide lists Silk Road in the later application window, with the award notice still under update. The detailed call will determine which nationalities and programmes qualify and what funding is available.

07 When does Tongji’s 2027 CSC application close?

The application deadline of CSC scholarship at Tongji University for Fall 2027 batch/entry is 20 December 2026, before 23:59 Beijing time. The application period runs from 25 October to 20 December 2026. Tongji states that modifications and supplementary materials are not accepted after the deadline.

The later doctoral application period for the Tongji University International Student Excellence Scholarship and Shanghai Municipal Government Scholarship is 10 January to 20 March 2027. The doctoral guide also lists Silk Road in this window, pending the detailed scholarship notice.

Tongji’s 2027 doctoral guide and updated admissions timeline confirm Fall 2027 entry. The CSC scholarship page displays a conflicting “Fall 2026” label next to the same application dates.

Start with three moves. Choose your doctoral programme and funding route. Request the document that will take longest to obtain. Then write down the research question you want to pursue and the work you have already done that prepares you for it.
