Scholarship Award Package

The MEXT YLP Scholarship offers a fully funded one-year Master’s in Public Policy at GRIPS, starting in October 2026. The award package includes:

• Waiver of all tuition, matriculation, and examination fees.
• Round-trip airfare between your home country and Japan.

Eligibility Criteria

This scholarship is designed for promising young public administrators and government officials who are expected to become national leaders in the future. The main eligibility requirements include:

• Nationality: Applicants must be citizens of countries participating in the YLP.
• Age: Must be under 40 as of October 1, 2026.
• Education: A bachelor’s degree or equivalent with a strong academic record.
• Experience: At least three years of full-time professional experience in public administration, preferably five or more.
• English Proficiency: A TOEFL iBT score of 79 or higher, or an IELTS Academic score of 6.0 or higher, or an equivalent test score.
• Health: Applicants must be medically fit to study in Japan.
• Commitment: Applicants are expected to return to their home country and continue serving in public administration after the program.

Program Highlights

The one-year program combines advanced learning with practical exposure. Students will gain knowledge in governance, economics, and international relations through courses and experiences such as:

• Core courses including The World and the SDGs and Introduction to Japan.
• Field trips to government institutions, industries, and cultural sites across Japan.
• Independent research projects under faculty supervision.
• Colloquium sessions with prominent policymakers and business leaders.
• Optional Japanese language classes to enhance cultural learning.

Applications are managed through Japanese Embassies and recommending authorities in each participating country. The timeline is as follows:

• Screening involves three stages: recommending authority review, GRIPS evaluation, and final selection by MEXT.
