University of Kent Opens Scholarships 2027-2028 Under Chevening (Process Explained)

The University of Kent is inviting internationally minded professionals to compete for the fully funded Chevening Scholarships for the 2027–2028 academic year. Applications are already open—but this is not an ordinary university scholarship form that can be completed in a few minutes.

You should consider applying if you completed your undergraduate degree at least two years ago, subsequently accumulated 2,800 hours of work experience and can explain how a one-year master’s degree at Kent will strengthen your future leadership impact. What Will the Chevening Scholarship Pay For?

This is a fully funded award rather than a tuition discount. A University of Kent Chevening Scholarship includes:

• A full tuition-fee waiver;
• A monthly living stipend;
• Travel costs to and from the United Kingdom;
• The cost of one visa application; and
• A travel grant for attending Chevening events in the UK.

The University of Kent reports that it offers three Chevening partner scholarships in addition to the standard Chevening awards. Applicants from all Chevening-eligible countries may select an eligible one-year taught master’s course delivered at Kent’s UK campuses.

Can You Apply for This Scholarship?

You can apply if you satisfy both the Chevening eligibility rules and the admission requirements of your chosen Kent course. Check your position against the following conditions before beginning the form:

• You must agree to return to your country of award for at least two years after completing the scholarship.
• You must hold an undergraduate degree that qualifies you for admission to a UK master’s programme.
• You must have completed your undergraduate studies at least two years before the Chevening application deadline.
• You must possess at least two years of post-graduation work experience, calculated as 2,800 hours.
• You must choose three different eligible UK master’s courses.
• You must secure at least one unconditional university offer by 8 July 2027.
• You must study in the UK throughout the scholarship.

A previous master’s degree does not automatically disqualify you. However, British or dual-British citizens, most applicants residing in the UK when applying, and people who previously studied in the UK through a UK government-funded scholarship are generally ineligible. Employment and family connections with specified UK government bodies, the British Council or partner universities may also create an exclusion.

Do You Need IELTS to Apply?

Chevening does not impose a separate English-language test requirement, but the University of Kent will require you to satisfy the English conditions of your selected course.

Kent classifies courses under Good, Very Good or Excellent English levels. For courses using the Good level, commonly published minimums include:

• IELTS Academic: 6.0 overall with at least 5.5 in every component;
• PTE Academic: 63 overall with at least 59 in each sub-test;
• Duolingo English Test: 110 overall, including 110 in speaking, writing and reading and 105 in listening;
• TOEFL iBT taken from 21 January 2026: 4.0 overall with 4.0 in every component;
• Cambridge B2 First: Grade C with at least 165 in each sub-test; and
• Oxford ELLT Digital: 6 overall with no component below 5.

Some programmes require the Very Good or Excellent level, so do not use the above scores without checking the exact Kent postgraduate course page. Kent also publishes approved qualification and Medium of Instruction routes, but acceptance depends on the applicant’s qualification, country and programme.

How to Apply in Simple Steps

1. Confirm your eligibility: Check your citizenship, graduation date and 2,800 hours of post-degree work experience.
2. Select three courses: Use the Chevening course finder and identify three eligible one-year UK master’s courses. Applicants targeting Kent are encouraged to place the university first.
3. Open your scholarship application: Visit the application page, select your country and complete the online registration and eligibility checker.
4. Complete the application: Enter your education, post-graduation employment history, three course choices and details of two referees. You must also answer the four questions covering leadership, relationship-building, course selection and career goals.
5. Apply separately to Kent: A Chevening application does not count as a university admission application. Submit the relevant master’s application through the University of Kent postgraduate application system.
6. Prepare for later stages: Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed between March and April 2027. Successful applicants must upload at least one unconditional UK university offer by 8 July 2027.

Should You Apply or Skip It?

Apply if you meet every technical condition and can support your leadership claims with specific evidence. A degree and two years of employment may make you eligible, but they will not by themselves make the application competitive. Your essays must connect your previous impact, chosen Kent course and realistic post-study plan.

Skip this cycle if you graduated less than two years before the deadline or earned your required work experience before completing your undergraduate degree. Those are eligibility barriers, not weaknesses that a strong personal statement can repair.

Applicants must also understand the return-home obligation. Kent states that Chevening scholars cannot use the UK Graduate Route after completing the award because accepting the scholarship includes a commitment to leave the UK and return home for at least two years.
