AMASE Europe Scholarships (MS/PhD) 2027: How to Apply Guide

Perhaps your interest in materials began with a simple question: why does one alloy survive heat, one coating resist corrosion, or one composite weigh less without losing strength? AMASE offers a way to follow that curiosity through two European universities, with Erasmus Mundus scholarships now available for 2027 entry.

The Advanced Materials Science and Engineering master’s combines a two-year, 120-ECTS education with study in two different teaching languages. Compared with a conventional single-campus scholarship, its distinctive value is the chance to develop specialist knowledge while learning to work across academic and linguistic settings.

That opportunity begins with a personal choice: which university combination suits your materials interests and language preparation? Your answer also determines your application deadline, so it is worth shaping the route before polishing your statement.

AMASE 2027: the Decisions that Matter first
Status: Open for winter-term 2027/28 entry.
Applicants: EU and non-EU candidates; academic and scholarship restrictions apply.
Support: Full awards include living support; partial awards waive tuition.
Language: University-specific evidence; two different teaching languages required.
Application fee: Not stated. Entrance-university deadlines apply.
Official information checked: 21 October 2026.
Six Countries to Choose from, Two main Study DestinationsYou spend year one at your Entrance University, semester three at your Second University, and write your thesis at either. Two English-teaching universities cannot be combined.

🇸🇪 SwedenLuleå University of Technology (LTU)
English; earlier scholarship deadline.

🇦🇹 AustriaMontanuniversität Leoben (MUL)
English; consider its certificate rules for either study year.

🇮🇹 ItalyUniversity of Padua (UNIPD)
English; a different IELTS threshold from LTU and MUL.

🇩🇪 GermanySaarland University (UdS)
German; also hosts shared integration activities.

🇫🇷 FranceUniversité de Lorraine (UL)
French; relevant degree-based language exemptions exist.

🇪🇸 SpainUniversitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC)
Spanish; match your certificate to the entrance requirements.

01 Start with your degree, then choose your teaching languages

A relevant bachelor’s degree of at least three years is the starting requirement. Materials science and engineering, physics, chemistry and related engineering studies are considered. For scholarship selection, however, the subject distinction matters.

EUSMAT excludes civil engineering, telecommunications, textile engineering, design, architecture, computational science and informatics degrees from scholarship entitlement; admission in these fields is exceptional. Research experience cannot override that published restriction.

For eligible candidates, the available specializations cover advanced metallic materials, polymers and composites, smart surfaces and functional materials, advanced processing technologies, and bio/nanomaterials. Availability varies by university.

My recommendation is to choose a materials theme first, then pair universities offering it with languages you can realistically manage. LTU and MUL accept IELTS Academic 6.5; Padua accepts 6.0, each with no component below 5.5. Alternatives and specified nationality exemptions apply. Saarland’s entrance requirement is German B1, Lorraine’s French B2 and UPC’s Spanish B2.

English alone therefore cannot cover the whole route. You may learn your second teaching language during year one, but must be ready to follow those classes when you move.

02 Decide what kind of offer would make the move possible

Only the full scholarship includes a monthly living allowance. With your route taking shape, this distinction helps you assess whether you could accept the eventual offer.

AMASE offer Coverage Your budget
Full Erasmus Mundus scholarship €1,400 monthly for 24 months; four semesters’ tuition and basic EU health insurance Travel, visa and accommodation costs come from the allowance; no separate extra payment.
Partial scholarship Four semesters’ tuition and basic EU health insurance Living and mobility costs need another funding source.

Route choice can also affect the allowance: EUSMAT restricts support for periods in your country of origin/residence or previous degree. Its FAQ advises choosing both universities outside your previous-degree country for full funding. If that affects you, resolve the route with EUSMAT before submitting.

03 Build the AMASE application around your chosen combination

One complete programme application brings automatic scholarship consideration when submitted by the relevant funding deadline. There is no separate general Erasmus Mundus application to send elsewhere.

  1. Establish your route. Read the university-specific requirements, including country-specific transcript rules. Prepare two entrance preferences and two second-university preferences.
  2. Pre-register in the 2027/28 AMASE application system. Use non-Gmail addresses for yourself and both referees; delivery problems can prevent notifications arriving.
  3. Prepare your PDFs: degree or approved final-year certificate, transcripts, passport, language evidence, English CV and English statement of purpose. The CV and statement should each fit one page. For other academic records, use accepted consortium languages or legally translated copies.
  4. Coordinate references and uploads. The system contacts your two referees directly. Use your registration password to upload documents, then complete the final submission; pre-registration alone is insufficient.
  5. Review the funding deadline on the official schedule and retain confirmation. Follow the application page for subsequent instructions; originals or certified copies are required on arrival.

I would use the statement to connect one relevant project with your proposed specialization. EUSMAT considers academic preparation, motivation, research or industry experience and languages, so a specific explanation can make your choices easier to understand.

04 Three Questions worth Settling before Submission

Can I apply while finishing my bachelor’s?

Yes. Provide a Registrar’s or Examinations Office certificate confirming final-year status and expected graduation; a professor’s letter or ordinary enrolment certificate is insufficient.

Can an English-medium letter replace IELTS?

No blanket substitution is allowed. AMASE requires the listed official evidence unless a published exemption applies to you; an English-medium university letter alone does not satisfy its English-test rules.

Can a previous Erasmus Mundus scholar receive another award?

Previous EMJM scholarship recipients are ineligible for another EMJM scholarship. Admission eligibility and eligibility for this funding are separate questions.

05 Your first university determines the scholarship deadline

The last date to apply for the AMASE Erasmus Mundus Scholarship for 2027 entry is 15 January 2027 when Luleå is your Entrance University, or 15 February 2027 for Barcelona, Saarland, Lorraine, Leoben or Padua. Both deadlines apply to EU and non-EU candidates.

Later self-funded deadlines do not extend scholarship consideration. Begin with a viable language combination, allow your referees time to respond, and submit the complete file before your entrance-university deadline.
