American Doctoral Fellowships 2027 With $25,000 Stipend for Women Phd Scholars
Women pursuing doctoral research in the United States now have a major funding window to watch: the AAUW American Doctoral Fellowship 2027 will open for applications on August 17, 2026, offering a $25,000 stipend to eligible doctoral scholars for one year of academic support.
This is not a routine university discount or small research grant. The American Doctoral Fellowship is part of AAUW’s historic American Fellowships program, established in 1888 and widely known as one of the oldest non-institutional graduate funding sources for women in the United States. For doctoral candidates facing the expensive final stretch of research, writing, data collection, fieldwork, or academic preparation, this fellowship can provide serious breathing room.
Who This Fellowship Is Designed For?
The AAUW American Doctoral Fellowship is open to applicants who identify as women and are pursuing their first doctoral degree. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and must begin their doctoral program on or before September 30, 2027.
The fellowship is available across all fields of study, but AAUW especially encourages applications from women working in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, or research connected to gender issues. Applicants studying at research-limited institutions, including R2 institutions, are also encouraged to apply because institutional context is considered during review.
Eligible Doctoral Programs
Applicants may apply if they are pursuing one of the following doctoral degrees:
- Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)
- Doctor of Science (D.Sc./Sc.D.)
- Doctor of Education (Ed.D.)
- Doctor of Juridical Science (S.J.D./J.S.D.)
- Doctor of Engineering (D.Eng.)
- Doctor of Public Health (Dr.P.H.)
- Doctor of Business Administration (D.B.A.)
Applicants must be enrolled at an institution accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or at an eligible international institution listed under U.S. federal student aid participating schools.
What the Fellowship Covers?
The AAUW American Doctoral Fellowship provides a $25,000 stipend. The amount is paid directly to fellows in two equal installments: one at the beginning of the fellowship term and the second around the midpoint.
This funding is meant to offset doctoral expenses during one year of study, helping scholars continue academic work without being forced to slow down progress because of financial pressure.
What AAUW Looks For in Applicants?
AAUW’s review is competitive and holistic. Strong candidates will need more than enrollment in a doctoral program. The selection process looks closely at academic excellence, originality of research, feasibility of the proposed plan, financial need, and evidence that the applicant’s work can contribute meaningfully to her academic or professional field.
AAUW also values applicants who show an active commitment to supporting women and girls through research, professional service, community work, or leadership. Preferred applicants may include those who have overcome major life challenges, are first-generation bachelor’s degree holders, are parenting students, or come from single-parent households.
Who Cannot Apply?
Applicants are not eligible if they are current AAUW Board members, AAUW employees, current AAUW review panelists, or immediate family members of those groups. Previous national AAUW fellowship or grant recipients are also not eligible, except recipients of Community Action Grants or branch/local AAUW awards.
Applicants may not apply for another national AAUW fellowship or grant in the same year, and they cannot be working on a master’s degree during the fellowship year.
Application Requirements
Applicants must submit a complete online application through the AAUW Fellowships & Grants Application Portal. Required documents include two recommendation letters, proof of all degrees earned, official transcripts, and proof of admission or current enrollment where applicable.
One recommendation must come from the dissertation advisor. If the applicant does not yet have a dissertation advisor, a current academic or research advisor may provide the letter. AAUW does not accept dossier-service references, and incomplete applications will not be reviewed.
Documents issued in a language other than English must include certified English translations where required.
