The funding is reserved for applicants from low- and middle-income countries of the Global South as defined under the OECD Development Assistance Committee (DAC) country classifications.
Applicants must also demonstrate that they are experiencing temporary financial hardship through circumstances beyond their control or require targeted financial support during the final phase of their studies.

Students may be considered if unexpected events have significantly affected their ability to finance their studies, making it difficult to continue or successfully complete their degree without temporary assistance.

Students who previously received support may apply again if a new hardship arises or if additional assistance is required to successfully complete their studies.
A Scholarship Built on Personal Experience

The scholarship fund was established in 2016 through the generosity of Dr. Mahomed T. Amirana and Dr. Annelene J. Amirana, two Heidelberg medical alumni who later built successful careers as physicians in the United States.
Their connection to the scholarship is deeply personal.
As a student, Mahomed Amirana benefited from financial support that enabled him to study medicine in Heidelberg. That assistance not only allowed him to complete his education but ultimately changed the direction of his life.
Reflecting on his experience, he has often credited that support for making his medical career possible and for leading him to meet his future wife during their studies in Germany.
Since its launch, the Amirana Scholarship Fund has helped more than 25 international medical and dental students continue their education at Heidelberg University.
Application Deadline
The last date to apply for the Amirana Scholarship 2027 offered by Heidelberg University is 15 November 2026. Selected applicants will receive funding support during the following academic year.
