A new wave of scholarship funding has emerged in the United Kingdom for international students planning their 2027 study journey. At a time when rising tuition costs continue to shape study-abroad decisions, the scheme provides meaningful financial support for undergraduate, master’s, MBA, and doctoral applicants from dozens of countries across Asia, Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and the Americas.

The International Excellence Scholarships are designed for academically strong international students who intend to fund their studies independently. Awards are based primarily on academic achievement and are available across a broad range of degree programmes at the University of Greater Manchester in the United Kingdom.

What Funding Is Available?

The university has structured the scholarship programme into multiple award levels, allowing students with different academic profiles to benefit.

Applicants from selected countries who apply directly to the university may receive:

  • £4,000 Gold Award for students with a First-Class degree or equivalent academic record
  • £3,000 Silver Award for students with Upper Second-Class or equivalent qualifications
  • £2,000 Bronze Award for other eligible applicants

Students applying through recruitment partners or from countries outside the designated scholarship regions may qualify for the International Merit Package, which provides tuition discounts ranging from £1,000 to £3,000.

The most competitive funding option is the Global Scholars Award, under which ten exceptional students will each receive a £5,000 tuition fee reduction.

Among those ten recipients, one candidate will be selected as the Chancellor’s Excellence Scholar and awarded a 100% tuition fee waiver for the first year of study.

The scholarship scheme focuses exclusively on tuition fee support. Accommodation expenses, living costs, travel expenses, visa fees, health insurance, and monthly stipends are not included.

Who Is Eligible?

The programme is open to international fee-paying students applying for eligible undergraduate, postgraduate taught, and doctoral programmes.

Applicants must hold an admission offer from the university and be self-funded. Students receiving government sponsorship are not eligible.

The university has identified a large number of priority countries whose citizens can access the higher-value Global Excellence Package. These include applicants from China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Turkey, Egypt, Brazil, Canada, the United States, all European Union countries, and numerous African nations.

Scholarship levels are determined by verified academic qualifications, making academic performance the primary selection factor for most awards.

Why the Global Scholars Award Matters?

While many university scholarships automatically reward academic grades, the Global Scholars Award introduces an additional level of competition.

Eligible students must first qualify for a Gold-level scholarship before entering the selection process. The university then evaluates candidates based on academic achievement, leadership potential, personal accomplishments, and their ability to contribute to the university’s international community.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interviews before final decisions are made.

Because only ten awards are available and just one student receives the Chancellor’s Excellence Scholar distinction, competition is expected to be intense among high-performing international applicants.

Additional Discounts for Selected Students

The scholarship scheme also includes several supplementary awards that can be combined with the main scholarship package.

Female students enrolling in STEM-related disciplines, including Engineering, Computing, Medical Biology, Biomedical Sciences, and Psychology, may receive an additional £500 Women in STEM Award.

Students progressing from approved international partner institutions may qualify for a £500 Transnational Education Progression Award, while immediate family members of current students or offer holders can receive a £500 Family Discount.

These additional awards can further reduce tuition costs, although the total value of combined awards cannot exceed the full first-year tuition fee.

For many international students seeking a UK degree without relying entirely on personal funds, the University of Greater Manchester’s scholarship package represents a practical route to reducing tuition costs. The strongest candidates are likely to be those who combine excellent academic performance with clear evidence of leadership, ambition, and future impact beyond the classroom.
