- A monthly living stipend;
- Basic medical insurance;
- One round-trip travel allowance between the scholar’s eligible base city and Beijing; and

Who Can Apply for the 2027 Scholarship?
International applicants from any academic discipline may apply if they hold a bachelor’s degree or will receive it by August 2027. Applicants must also demonstrate:
- An outstanding academic record;
- A serious interest in interdisciplinary China Studies;
- Leadership potential, community engagement or extracurricular achievement;
- English proficiency; and
- A valid non-Chinese passport for the international application route.
No previous qualification in China Studies or Chinese language is required. Applicants who already hold a master’s degree may also apply. How Can You Apply Without IELTS at Yenching Institute for Scholarship in 2027?
You can apply without IELTS if you are an international applicant whose native language is English or you have graduated from a degree taught entirely in English. This waiver applies to an English-taught undergraduate degree or a higher qualification.
You should therefore prepare an official Medium of Instruction or English-taught degree certificate if your transcript or diploma does not clearly identify English as the teaching language.
Applicants who do not qualify for the exemption must provide one of the accepted results:
- IELTS Academic: 7.0 overall;
- TOEFL iBT: 100 overall;
- Cambridge English Scale Advanced: 185 overall;
- CET-6: 600; or
- TEM-4: “良好” or above.
Tests must have been taken after September 1, 2026. IELTS One Skill Retake, IELTS Online, IELTS Indicator, TOEFL Home Edition and TOEFL MyBest Scores are not accepted.
Documents Required for Application Submission
Your application must be completed in English and supported by academic evidence and two correctly selected referees. Prepare:
- Online application form;
- Personal statement of no more than 750 words;
- Statement of Research Interest of up to 1,500 words, excluding citations;
- Curriculum Vitae;
- Official academic transcripts;
- Degree certificate or current enrolment certificate;
- Two academic recommendation letters; and
- English test result or evidence supporting your exemption.
The two recommendations must come from full professors, associate professors or academics holding equivalent titles in your intended field. Employer references should not replace these compulsory academic letters.
How to Apply Without an Application Fee?
The official Yenching Academy instructions do not list an application fee for the standard international application submitted through its portal. Follow these steps:
- Create an account on the Yenching Academy application portal.
- Complete the online application in English.
- Upload your statements, CV, transcripts, degree evidence and English requirement waiver document or test result.
- Register two eligible academic referees and ensure their letters are submitted before the deadline.
- Review every entry and submit the application electronically.
Students and alumni of a listed Partner University must first participate in their university’s internal pre-selection process. Applicants from other institutions normally apply directly through the Yenching portal.
