University of Exeter Scholarships 2027 to Study for FREE in England: Guide for International Students
University of Exeter Scholarships for 2027 open several routes into undergraduate, master’s and doctoral study in the UK, with more than £8 million advertised for international students in 2027/28. Applications are already open for Exeter Excellence Scholarships worth £15,000, alongside automatic country awards and specialist funding for teaching, mining and research.
Whether your next step is a first degree, a career-focused master’s or a research project, Exeter’s three faculties offer a broad choice. The funding question is which award matches your programme, nationality and starting date: January 2027 belongs to the 2026/27 funding cycle, while September 2027 uses the new 2027/28 schemes. This consolidated guide brings together the currently published routes, their eligible subjects and the application sequence.
September Excellence and several doctoral competitions are open; other calls are pending or closed.
Excellence welcomes eligible international-fee applicants worldwide. Country and specialist awards have narrower rules.
£15,000 Excellence awards: recurring in eligible undergraduate years; first year only for taught master’s.
Most awards reduce tuition. Hornby and funded PhD routes can also support living costs.
Separate January and September schemes. Use the award-specific calendar below.
3 November 2026. Unpublished 2027 calls are identified separately.
01 Which Exeter scholarships can international students pursue?
Exeter Excellence is the main competitive route for self-funded international-fee applicants from around the world. Automatic country scholarships provide a separate route, while previous Exeter students can qualify for progression or alumni discounts.
| Scholarship programme | Verified support | Who and how |
|---|---|---|
| Exeter Excellence Undergraduate 2027/28 | 150 awards of £15,000 per eligible full-fee year. | International-fee offer holders entering year one in September; separate scholarship form. |
| Exeter Excellence Postgraduate Taught 2027/28 | 150 awards of £15,000 against first-year tuition. | Eligible September master’s offer holders with international fee status; competitive application. |
| Exeter Excellence: January 2027 | £3,000, £5,000 or £10,000 first-year fee reduction. | Offer holders for the ten January programmes listed below; separate 2026/27 application. |
| Class of 2027 Progression / Alumni Scholarship 2027/28 | 20% off first-year tuition. | Qualifying Exeter finalists progressing directly, or eligible former students, on most standalone postgraduate taught or research degrees; automatic assessment. |
Tuition discounts leave a balance to finance, along with accommodation, food, travel and immigration costs. Undergraduate Excellence does not pay during study-abroad, placement or repeat years. September Excellence and country discounts cannot be added together; the higher Exeter award normally replaces the lower one.
I would build an affordable plan around the award you can substantiate, then treat competitive funding as an improvement. A £15,000 tuition reduction is substantial, but it is not a living-cost stipend.
02 Which countries receive automatic Exeter scholarships?
For September 2027, Exeter advertises ten undergraduate country schemes and twenty postgraduate taught country schemes. These require the relevant citizenship/passport, international fee status, an eligible offer and enrolment; they are intended for self-funded students.
| Entry and award | Countries or territories | Tuition reduction |
|---|---|---|
| Undergraduate, September 2027 | Cambodia, mainland China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Philippines, South Korea, Türkiye, Vietnam. | £3,000 each eligible full-fee year. |
| Master’s, September 2027 | Bangladesh, Egypt, Ghana, India, Kenya, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Vietnam. | £10,000 in year one. |
| Master’s, September 2027 | Canada, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, Thailand, Türkiye. | £7,500 in year one. |
| Master’s, September 2027 | Mainland China, Taiwan, USA. | £5,000 in year one. |
Undergraduate country recipients must make Exeter their Firm UCAS choice by their personal reply deadline; an Insurance choice is ineligible. Master’s recipients must meet their offer conditions, including the required deposit. The 2027/28 master’s schemes also advertise January 2028 entry, whose eligible programme details are still to follow.
January 2027 has different country-award values
Under the 2026/27 scheme, the ten eligible January master’s programmes attract £10,000 for Egypt, Ghana, Kenya and Nigeria; £8,000 for Vietnam; £7,500 for Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka; and £5,000 for Canada, mainland China, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Türkiye. There is no USA award in that published cycle.
January Excellence can combine with the listed £5,000, £7,500 or £8,000 country awards only up to £10,000 total; Exeter reduces the Excellence component when necessary. This permission belongs to January 2027’s rules and does not carry over to September.
03 Which Exeter programmes are covered for 2027?
September funding spans all three faculties, subject to award-specific exclusions. Exeter’s 2027 undergraduate catalogue contains more than 200 courses; the subject map below shows the breadth covered by the main scholarship lists. Admission to a course and eligibility for a particular scholarship remain separate decisions.
| Faculty | Subjects on the main award lists |
|---|---|
| Environment, Science and Economy | Computer science; earth and environmental science; ecology and conservation; economics; engineering; finance and accounting; geography; management; mathematics and statistics; physics and astronomy. Natural Sciences is also listed for undergraduate awards. |
| Health and Life Sciences | Biosciences; clinical and biomedical sciences; health and care professions; health and community sciences; psychology; public health and sports sciences. |
| Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences | Arab and Islamic studies; archaeology and history; classics, ancient history, religion and theology; communications, drama and film; English and creative writing; languages, cultures and visual studies; law; social and political sciences, philosophy and anthropology. Undergraduate lists include Humanities and Social Sciences in Cornwall; master’s lists include Education. |
Undergraduate exclusions: Excellence excludes BMBS Medicine, BSc Medical Imaging, the Chinese University of Hong Kong dual LLB/JD, Brickfields Asia College LLB and degree apprenticeships. Country awards additionally exclude the Simon Fraser double-degree partnership and Graduate Law LLB. Graduate Law LLB is explicitly included in undergraduate Excellence. Both schemes exclude progression from Exeter ISC International Foundation.
Master’s exclusions: September Excellence and country awards exclude One Planet MBA; MRes Economics; MRes Finance (Pathway to PhD); MSc Island Biodiversity and Conservation; CEDAR clinical psychology programmes; DEdPsych Educational Child and Community Psychology; MA International Film Business; MPA with Applied Study; University of Law-delivered programmes; MiPDAL; PGCerts, PGDips, degree apprenticeships and fully online/distance programmes. Graduate Law LLB uses separate undergraduate funding rules.
The ten eligible January 2027 MSc programmes are Business Analytics; Business and Management; Finance and Management; International Business and Strategy; Marketing Management; Advanced Data Science; Computer Science; Data Science; Engineering Business Management; and International Supply Chain Management. The September award rules cannot be applied to a different January course.
04 Which specialist Exeter funding programmes deserve attention?
A subject or personal connection can open a different funding route, including programmes excluded from the main awards. Match the following schemes to your circumstances before preparing an additional application.
- A.S. Hornby Educational Trust Scholarship: Up to ten fully funded places on September 2027 MEd TESOL, covering fees, a monthly living allowance and return international travel. Applicants must be nationals of, resident in and working in an eligible OECD DAC low- or middle-income country, with at least three years of relevant full-time experience after their first degree. A relevant doctorate or a UK master’s in TESOL/related fields excludes eligibility.
- Women in Mining UK Scholarship 2027: Two £15,000 awards for female offer holders on MSc Mining Engineering, Mining Environmental Management, Minerals Processing, Exploration and Mining Geology, or Geotechnical Engineering. The page describes cash instalments but later calls the award a fee discount: obtain written clarification of payment before budgeting.
- Ho Tim Foundation Scholarship: One £50,000 award advertised for China/Hong Kong citizens, covering full fees with the remainder towards living/travel costs. Eligible full-time programmes are Conservation and Biodiversity; Evolution, Behaviour and Ecology; Global Sustainability Solutions; Island Biodiversity and Conservation; Marine Environmental Management; Marine Vertebrate Ecology and Conservation; Renewable Energy Engineering; Weather and Climate Science; and One Planet MBA. Its international-fee eligibility conflicts with a Home-fee clause in the terms; that point needs Exeter’s written resolution.
- Graduate LLB Scholarship (Canada): Canadian nationals normally living in Canada can receive £2,500 in year one and another £2,500 in year two if they achieve a 60%/2:1 average in year one. September 2027 offer holders must make Exeter their Firm choice; no separate scholarship form.
- Sports Scholarships and bursaries: Undergraduate and postgraduate applicants can pursue athlete support. Sport Scholarships and Sport Performance Bursaries provide up to £3,000 for sporting expenses; a separate travel bursary offers up to £750. Admission standards still apply, and representation commitments are required.
- Choral and Organ Scholarships: Audition-based opportunities exist through the University Chapel Choir, Exeter Cathedral and local churches. The funding page contains historical amounts, so it does not establish a confirmed 2027 award value.
- Sanctuary Scholarship: Applicants already in the UK with qualifying asylum/refugee circumstances and no access to student finance may pursue full tuition and living support for eligible full-time undergraduate or doctoral study. Taught and research master’s programmes and BMBS Medicine are excluded. This is not a relocation scholarship for applicants overseas.
Exeter also lists the Horwill Memorial and C.V. Thomas entrance scholarships for specific regional or Truro School connections. Home-fee routes include the mature-student scholarship and Access to Exeter Bursary; Aziz Foundation funding is for eligible British Muslim master’s applicants. These have their own residence, fee-status or personal criteria and are not general overseas-student awards.
One Planet MBA’s 2027 course page also advertises MBA scholarships, including the UN SDG Scholarship, assessed after an offer through the interview and possibly a video. Its linked Better World and UN SDG award records still show 2026/27 amounts and deadlines, so those percentages should not be presented as confirmed 2027 funding.
Other named records—LME, Richard Osman Memorial Fund, CSM Trust, Broad Reach, Shireen Abu Akleh, MA Archaeology Ayudar, MA Film & Screen Studies and Glanely Food and Farming—still describe older calls. Alumni Family and Friends 2027/28 details are pending. The Medical Mycology Online scholarship currently covers 2026/27 PGCert entry; a September 2027 renewal has not been confirmed.
05 What can fund doctoral study or a full-cost Exeter degree?
Doctoral students should use studentship competitions rather than taught-master’s Excellence. These currently advertised routes accept international applications, with limited international places in some cohorts; partnership totals are not Exeter-only award quotas.
| 2027 research route | Funding and subject fit | Application distinction |
|---|---|---|
| BBSRC SWBio DTP | Four-year bioscience projects: stipend, tuition and research/training support. Successful international recipients do not pay the Home/international fee difference. | Apply for an advertised project using SWBio’s instructions. |
| EPSRC Doctoral Landscape Award | Up to 16 university-wide studentships, normally 3.5 years; stipend, fees including the international difference, and research support. | Use the application link in the chosen project PDF. A generic PhD application does not enter the funding competition. |
| ESRC South West DTP | Social-science pathways, including master’s-plus-PhD training where needed; limited international awards and a fee-gap waiver. | Agree primary supervision, prepare Annex A and supervisor Annex B, then apply through the relevant pathway. |
| MRC Functional Genomics DLA | Four-year experimental/computational genomics projects; fees, stipend and research support. Up to 18 awards across six institutions. | Select from the advertised projects; establish the international-fee coverage in your funding offer. |
| Tandem Catalysts for Selective Acidic CO₂ Electrolysis | April 2027 start, or soon afterwards: one three-year Engineering studentship covering international fees and a stipend advertised at at least £21,805 annually. | Apply to the specific faculty-funded project, reference 6024. |
SWBio, EPSRC and MRC pages quote £21,805 as the current 2026/27 UKRI stipend baseline; the final 2027/28 rate should not be inferred from that figure. EPSRC and SWBio international places are limited to up to 30% of their cohorts. Budget separately for visa, health surcharge and relocation costs unless your award expressly covers them.
Exeter’s wider centre directory also lists NERC GW4+, SuMMeR, TARGET and UNRISK; MRC Medical Mycology and GW4 BioMed; AHRC South West and Wales; electromagnetic materials, offshore renewable energy and GW4 CAT HP. Their listings do not establish that every route has an open 2027 competition. The MRC GW4 BioMed 2027 deadline has already passed; the central CSC and Exeter–Paris-Saclay pages still provide previous-cycle details.
Partner scholarships beyond the university competitions
The Beacon Scholarship supports undergraduate candidates from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, South Africa and Zimbabwe through school-head nomination and a partner-university offer before an invitation to apply. Its quota of up to seven UK awards is shared across partner universities. Chevening—including Exeter’s MStrat partnership—and Commonwealth master’s/PhD applications for September 2027 are already closed. Commonwealth Shared 2027/28 details are expected in November; an Exeter course list and deadline were not yet published when checked.
06 What should you prepare for Exeter admission and selection?
For Excellence, you need an eligible conditional or unconditional offer before submitting the scholarship form. Undergraduate academic selection expects AAB at GCE A level or Exeter’s accepted equivalent; taught-master’s selection expects a UK 2:1 equivalent. These are scholarship benchmarks, and the chosen degree can require different subject qualifications.
- Admission evidence: Prepare academic transcripts and qualifications, certified English translations where needed, and the English evidence required by your course. Exeter master’s applicants normally supply at least one appropriate reference; some programmes require two. A personal statement is not compulsory for every master’s programme.
- September Excellence statement: Prepare two responses of up to 150 words each: connect your aspirations and formative experiences to Exeter, then explain your intended contribution and impact as a scholar. Exeter values authentic individual insight; one application per eligible offered programme is permitted.
- Research evidence: Follow the project’s own checklist for a CV, statement/proposal, transcripts, English evidence and references. ESRC additionally requires its named forms and agreed supervision. Treat reference submission as your responsibility.
English is assessed through the profile attached to your programme, including accepted tests or qualifying prior study where permitted. There is no university-wide scholarship IELTS waiver. UK grade labels should be interpreted through Exeter’s country-specific admissions requirements, rather than converted into an invented universal GPA.
My recommendation is to choose two concrete examples before drafting your scholarship answers. Our motivation-letter guide can help you connect experience, programme fit and contribution; Exeter’s own prompts and word limits take precedence.
07 Application process: where do you submit each Exeter application?
Use the route that belongs to your award. Most Excellence applicants begin with admission, whereas Hornby and some doctoral competitions have their own starting point.
- Choose the exact course and intake. Use Exeter’s 2027 undergraduate catalogue, master’s catalogue or research-degree catalogue. January applicants should use the January-start course page. Match the course to the exclusions above.
- Submit admission through the appropriate service. Full-time undergraduate applicants apply through UCAS, using Exeter code E84/EXETR; the UCAS fee guidance confirms £34.50 for up to five choices, with specific fee-waiver exceptions. Master’s applicants use the new-student portal linked from Exeter’s master’s application instructions. Follow its supporting-document requirements and your course’s English profile.
- Enter the correct Excellence competition after your offer. Use the form linked in undergraduate Excellence, September 2027 master’s Excellence or January 2027 master’s Excellence. The undergraduate terms and 2027/28 master’s terms give the scheduled rounds and acceptance conditions.
- Use automatic awards without an extra scholarship form. Consult the country-funding directory and the undergraduate country terms, September 2027 master’s country terms or January 2027 cycle terms. Declare qualifying Exeter study for Alumni or Class of 2027 Progression assessment. Canadian law applicants use the Graduate LLB award rules.
- Follow specialist scholarship instructions. Hornby applicants submit the scholarship form first; shortlisted candidates are instructed to apply for MEd TESOL. Other offer holders use the forms on Women in Mining, Ho Tim or Sanctuary. Athletes use the sports application route; musicians follow audition instructions. For the additional restricted awards, use the undergraduate funding directory or master’s funding directory. MBA candidates use the 2027 One Planet MBA application and interview route.
- Apply to a funded research project or pathway. Use SWBio, EPSRC DLA, ESRC SWDTP, MRC Functional Genomics or the CO₂ electrolysis studentship. The funded-centres directory and funding database provide further project adverts; follow each advert’s submission link.
- Accept the offer and funding on their own terms. Meet academic and English conditions and the deadline in your award notification. Exeter’s deposit guidance currently requires a £2,500 deposit for full-time taught postgraduate places, with stated sponsorship/US federal-loan exemptions. An award can impose a different deposit deadline. Complete enrolment so the fee reduction can be applied.
08 Which mistakes can cost you Exeter funding?
Do not use September 2027 amounts for January entry, assume a tuition award covers living costs, or add incompatible Exeter discounts. For undergraduate country funding, choosing Exeter as Insurance prevents allocation. For EPSRC and ESRC, using a generic PhD admission route can miss the funding panel. Deferral, a fee-status change or transfer to an excluded course can invalidate an award. Resolve the Ho Tim eligibility conflict and Women in Mining payment conflict in writing before relying on either offer.
09 Other questions about Exeter scholarships for 2027
Can I apply if my country is absent from the automatic-award list?
Yes. Exeter Excellence is based on international fee status and programme eligibility rather than the twenty-country master’s list. You still need an offer and must compete through its scholarship form.
Does an integrated master’s count as postgraduate taught study?
An integrated undergraduate degree such as an MEng or MSci follows undergraduate admission and funding rules. Use the award classification attached to your course, rather than relying on “master’s” in its title.
Can previous exchange study qualify me for the Alumni Scholarship?
Yes, qualifying inbound Study Abroad study and a credit-bearing Exeter International Summer School can count, as can specified prior Exeter awards or credit-bearing study. Declare that history in your postgraduate application for assessment.
Can I request an ESRC-funded master’s year before my PhD?
Yes, where the training-needs assessment supports it; this route is also available to eligible international award holders. It is a linked doctoral-training route, rather than a general scholarship for any standalone master’s.
Are all scholarships shown in Exeter’s database open for 2027?
No. Some records retain an earlier intake or a passed deadline, and individual projects have additional restrictions. Use the intake and deadline in the actual award record before preparing an application.
10 Exeter scholarship deadlines for the 2027 intakes
The nearest verified scholarship cutoff is Hornby: 22 November 2026. January 2027 Excellence closes on 26 November 2026. September entrants should also note the early doctoral deadlines below; there is no single university-wide scholarship deadline.

| September undergraduate country awards | Degree application by 30 June 2027; Firm acceptance by your individual UCAS reply deadline. |
| September master’s country awards | The terms require programme application by 31 July 2027; award pages show allocation continuing until 31 August. Use the earlier application date. |
| Graduate LLB Canada / Alumni / Progression | Canadian LLB record: 30 September 2027, with the personal UCAS Firm deadline still controlling acceptance. Alumni and Class of 2027 schemes cover enrolment from 1 September 2027 to 31 August 2028. |
EPSRC reference instructions differ: departmental adverts request references by 8 January 2027, while the central page gives 15 February. Arrange the earlier date and follow your project’s written instructions. GMT is UTC+0. Where a scholarship page gives an ambiguous or missing closing time, submit before the final day.
Chevening closed on 6 October 2026; Commonwealth master’s and PhD applications closed on 20 October 2026. The pending Commonwealth Shared, CSC and other next-cycle calls need their own published 2027 instructions before they can be treated as open.
I recommend starting with the earliest funded route that fits your actual programme. Secure the required offer or supervisor, prepare the relevant evidence, and keep admission, scholarship, references and acceptance dates as separate entries in your calendar.
I want to apply for undergraduate graduation in economics.
Bilal Hassan, to apply for undergraduate Economics you’ll submit your application through UCAS using the University of Exeter code E84/EXETR. Make sure your course choice matches Economics and follow Exeter’s supporting-document requirements only if your application route asks for them. Also check the funding cycle: if you’re starting in January 2027, it falls under the 2026/27 cycle; if you’re starting in September 2027, it uses the 2027/28 schemes. If you share your intended intake month and your nationality, I can point you to the right scholarship route mentioned in the guide.
