Max Planck-funded PhD applications for 2027 are now open through four International Max Planck Research Schools and four interdisciplinary Max Planck Schools. International applicants can currently target research opportunities in artificial intelligence, biology, mathematics, physics, astronomy, materials science, cognition, photonics and biomedical AI.

The earliest confirmed deadline is 30 September 2026, while the main Max Planck Schools application window remains open until 1 December 2026. However, you must select the programme matching your qualification and research interests because there is no single application covering every Max Planck opportunity.

Which Max Planck Opportunities Are Open for 2027?

At least eight Max Planck-funded doctoral routes are accepting applications for 2027 entry. Four are International Max Planck Research Schools, commonly called IMPRS, while four belong to the broader Max Planck Schools network.

Applicants should understand the difference. An IMPRS is normally connected to particular Max Planck institutes and partner universities. The Max Planck Schools operate through nationwide research networks and may offer an integrated route for applicants entering with a Bachelor’s degree.

The central Max Planck IMPRS directory lists 68 research schools, but this does not mean all 68 are currently recruiting. Each school controls its own application window, academic conditions and funding arrangement.

Four Open IMPRS PhD Scholarships for which You May APPLY

1# IMPRS for Condensed Matter Science

This is the most urgent opportunity because its spring-round deadline is 30 September 2026. The programme covers condensed-matter physics, solid-state chemistry, nanoscience and materials science.

Applicants normally need a Master’s degree in physics, chemistry or materials science. Exceptional candidates holding a four- or five-year honours Bachelor’s degree may also qualify for direct consideration. Other outstanding Bachelor’s graduates may be considered for a fellowship connected with an eligible Master’s programme at the University of Stuttgart.

2# IMPRS for Biology, Maths, AI and Physics

Applicants interested in interdisciplinary life sciences, artificial intelligence or quantitative research can apply until 15 October 2026. The programme in Dresden accepts relevant backgrounds in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, physics and engineering.

An MSc is normally required, but an exceptional BSc-only applicant with considerable research experience may be considered. Two academic referees must submit their recommendations before the applicant can complete the final submission. The programme does not require applicants to upload IELTS, TOEFL or GRE scores.

3# IMPRS for Astronomy and Astrophysics

This Bonn-based doctoral programme is recruiting applicants interested in astronomy, astrophysics and radio-astronomical research. Suitable applicants will normally hold an MSc or equivalent qualification in physics, astronomy or a closely related field.

The current call is advertised with a deadline of 1 November 2026. Applicants should consult the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy application announcement for its available projects and submission instructions.

4# IMPRS for Intelligent Systems

This funded PhD route is particularly relevant to applicants in AI, robotics, machine learning and computational sciences. Its research areas include natural-language processing, computer vision, data science, neuroscience, control systems, haptics, biomedical technology and human-computer interaction.

Applicants should hold, or expect to receive soon, a Master’s degree in computer science, engineering, cognitive science, mathematics, physics, neuroscience, materials science or a related discipline. Successful candidates receive funding through an employment contract.

Four Max Planck Schools Accepting Applications

Bachelor’s and Master’s graduates can also apply to four fully funded Max Planck Schools until 1 December 2026. These programmes are especially important for applicants who want an integrated graduate route rather than applying only to a conventional direct-entry PhD.

• Max Planck School of Biomedical Artificial Intelligence – for AI, data science, medicine, biology and health-related computational research.
• Max Planck School of Cognition – for neuroscience, psychology, behavioral science, cognitive science and related quantitative fields.
• Max Planck School Matter to Life – for interdisciplinary research connecting physics, chemistry, engineering and the life sciences.
• Max Planck School of Photonics – for optics, photonics, physics, electrical engineering and associated technologies.

What Does the Max Planck Funding Cover?

Successful candidates receive enough institutional funding to pursue their doctoral training without paying tuition fees. However, the legal form of that funding differs between schools.

The Max Planck Schools provide full funding for up to five years. Students entering the initial programme phase, particularly Bachelor’s graduates completing preparatory or Master’s-level study, normally receive a scholarship and may receive support for health insurance and research materials. After successfully completing that phase, candidates normally move to an employment contract based on the applicable German public-service salary agreement.

The IMPRS programmes may fund researchers through employment contracts, scholarships or institute-specific arrangements. For example, the IMPRS for Intelligent Systems explicitly states that selected candidates receive an employment contract.

You can apply from any country if your academic qualification and research background match the selected programme. German citizenship is not required, and international recruitment is a central feature of both IMPRS and Max Planck Schools.

Is IELTS Required for Max Planck Scholarship and Is There an Age Limit?

There is no universal IELTS score or general upper age limit covering all eight opportunities. Each programme decides how applicants must demonstrate English proficiency.

The Dresden IMPRS for Biology, Maths, AI and Physics specifically says that TOEFL and IELTS results are not required, although applicants may upload them. The IMPRS for Intelligent Systems requests TOEFL scores or other evidence of English ability from non-native speakers. Previous English-medium education, an English-language thesis or professional work conducted in English may therefore be relevant evidence, subject to programme assessment.

None of the reviewed central calls publishes a general maximum age. Selection focuses on academic preparation, research potential and programme fit rather than a uniform age restriction.
